I have a maxxum pro 80 and sometimes it gets hung up. what i mean by that is it seems like sometimes the prop gets stuck it wont move no matter what speed its on. but all you have to do is start spinning it yourself and it starts up. I have already taken it all apart and cleaned everything. Could the brushes be bad?

sounds like you have a dead spot on the armature.
about 4 or 5 years ago Minnkota put out some armatures
that would fail by mistake. so far they have been
covering them under warranty. they pay for
the parts you cover the labor. It takes about 20 minutes.

Can that repair be done by an individual? I have a motor that has the same problem. Was told that MinnKota would not take care of it because it was out of warranty as I was not the original owner (motor was new when I bought the boat second hand) and the repair was very expensive.

the cost of the armature is $68.40
and you will need the 2 thru bolt seals,
the others are compression seals and don't
normally need changing. be sure and use
vaseline on ALL of them. it will water proof
the seals and come off in 10 years the same way it went on.
after 28 year i've found that's the best lube you can use.

I'm just curious and not doubting your experience at all.... but what happens on those really hot days to the vaseline. Doesn't it melt and run out? We used to use it as an assembly lube on automatic transmission seals because when the tranny heated up it would melt away and be gone.

That definitely sounds like the issue - I had the same thing and Jim fixed mine up promptly and under warranty. Jim is the man! He's been working on 'em for years as an official Minn Kota rep, and now as a 'retiree'.

After watching him do mine, I'd much rather let him, or someone like him, perform the replacement. I'm very mechanically inclined, but there are some tricky aspects to this procedure that are probably better left for a professional.

Thanks Jim. I might want to put that thing together. I will call you for parts. I use it as a spare so it doesn't bother me too much. Might follow Roger's advice as I too am pretty mechanically adept, but it may be over my head.

this will be my last responce to this question.
this is not a transmission, that's why i have a transmission
cooler in my truck for towing my boat.
these motors run in the water and are cooled by
the water, so vaseline is the perfect lube.

i used the 1 i keep on hand i used 1 week ago.

No need to get defensive, I was just asking a question. I've seen what vaseline looks like in it's container on a 100 degree day. I can only imagine what happens to it in a black housing on a 100 degree day. Thanks for your insightful answer though, very helpful.
