First time poster here and rookie bass fisherman so please go easy on me.

I'm looking to add some brush hogs to my arsenal. I mostly fish Piru, Castaic, Casitas and Pyramid. What colors would be best to get? Also should I get the baby ones or regular?

I'm assuming you guys carolina rig these correct? And fishing them on 8# on my Crucial Drop shot rig would be ok?

I love the brush hog and have made it part of my everyday arsenal.

the lakes you are fishing you need to have just a few standard colors to get bit consistently.

Green Pumpkin w/Purple flake
Green Pumpkin

Watermelon candy
Watermelon red flake

These are all used on stand up heads and/or c-rigs. I will shake them on occasion as well.

Experiment and you can do well! I'd move up a bit in line weight though...no less than 10lb.

you know what...I like the baby brush hogs best. IN the summer the big ones are nice to pitch around the grass holes and shake on the outside of the grass lines.

C-rigging and jig heads I use the babies and they have gotten me fish up to 9.5lbs consistently!

Watermelons in the sunny part of the day and the green pumpkins during the lower light periods!

and at night I will fish the regular brush hogs in Big Texan!

Just to reiterate (is that how you spell it) on what everybody else is saying. The baby brush hogs are gonna get you more fish, the full size will get you better quality you can do anything with either of them. Flippin the big ones are great peg the weights, for the baby brush hogs use a mojo rig wieght with the sinker pegged like 2ft up the line...its the west coasts answer to a big heavy cumbersome carolina rig, you can use it on lighter line a spinning rig with no leaders or swivels. Pretty much any variation of green/brown is gonna work.

Brush hogs are definitely one of those legendary baits and they tend to work everywhere.

Like elfish said before, get Watermelon Candy baby brush hogs, you are pretty much guaranteed to catch fish. I always liked texas rigging them, 3/16 oz weight and a 2/0 Roundbend offest worm hook.

You're new to bass fishing and I kinda wish I could be back at that time. My advice; try ALOT of baits, and really take the time to learn and appreciate what you like in a bait and why it catches more fish for you than another similar bait. Try to build your confidence in as many types of lures as possible (plastics, jigs, crankbaits, topwater, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, etc.) you'll be a better angler for it.

Also, get ready for your wallet to be alot lighter from now on

I think what everyone told you is great! I even picked up a few myself. Here in So Cal I have found that most of us fish a brushhog just two ways:

1. Texas rig the FULL SIZE broshhog
2. Carolina the smaller one

One bit of advice that I like to give is to use a Gamakatsu G-LOC hook. Its shape allows you to push the hook all the way through the brushhog and still be completely weedless. Allows MUCH easier hooksets, especially with the full size brushhog.

In Havasu I have also been known to fish the Tiny brushhog as well. Smallies love em.

I use the modified "Bobby Rig" which Bo Viescas showed me.
Basically, it's a Texas rig with two 1/8oz. tungsten slip sinkers back to back. You get a great clicking, like a crawdad, and the 1/8 oz sinker slips through almost everything.
And sometimes they separate on the fall, so you get different fall rates for suspended fish.

Pretty good information, when I was down south I primariliy used the baby brush hogs and tiny brush hogs for carolina rigs and split shot rigs. Up North I use primarily the Full Size Brush Hog texas rigged or carolina rigged and the baby brush hog on a split shot or drop shot.

99% of the time I use the Baby Brush Hog over the Brush Hog. They just seem to produce more bites for me and the size of the fish have been comparable to the fish I have caught on the larger one.......go figure. As far as colors I use three - Watermelon with Red/Blake Flake, Muscadine, and PB&J. Good Luck and Welcome!!!!!

Welcome to the world of Bass Fishing...like elfish said on the colors, I also use the Baby version in those colors, but I either split shot or the modified C-Rig (Carolina Rig) by using the old Rubber Core sinker or pegging a Worm weight or Mojo with Rubber or adding a Glass Bead to the Brass Worm Weight and pegging the bead and you will get the clicking sound. When split shotting I will sometimes go down to 4lb and I use light wire hooks.
