The faster you use 'em, the sooner the motor is done. My '85 Yammy 150 (rebuilt once) still pushing the Ranger around. Clue - I almost NEVER run at full throttle. It's not how many hours, it' how the hours are used!

I have a 1973 Evinrude 85HP on my boat that is running strong, probably has well over 1000 HRs on it

I had over 650hrs on my 99 optimax and never had any problems with it. Granted the only time I was really on it was during tournaments. I think as long as you do the 100hr service everytime and run the premium oil you should be just fine.

Well I can honestly say I have blown up almost all brands of outboard. Probably about 6 powerheads on all dif motors including merc optimax , evinrude carborated motors, johnsons, and about 4 Etecs I have blown up as well. I always run my motors pretty hard. But since I got my first Etec I run them pretty slow. The four Etecs I have blown up all had less than 150 hours on them and blew up doing about 3500 rpms. All my motors were replaced under warranty only because the motor computor retained all the evidence I was not abusing it. outboards are just unreliable plain and simple. If I had to list the things that have gone wrong this list would be so freakin long im sure no one would ever by an etec so I will not list them. Basically no outboard is trustworthy unless you fish once or twice a year. sorry for the rant . Kind of upset because this weekend I tore my etec off my ranger while cruising around havasu and to find out warranty does not cover it blows me away. Damn our expensive sport !! haha

There are two kinds of outboards in this world. Those that are blown up and those that are going to blow up! My Opti has 450 hrs on it. Runs great now, but you never know when they will scatter.

Perhaps another question would be "How many times have you limped in on your trolling motor because your Outboard took a crap."

My first boat was 1978 that had a 115 Merc and I got 1100 hours before it died on me. Now I have a 2000 Ficht with 500 hours and my first issue with it was back in March it blew some sort of brass fitting out of a tee in the fuel line. It's been parked in the Garage every since.

De carb your motor once a year and run Ringfree or Seafoam and I believe it will last longer.
