Question on California Fishing License

My Son is coming in today and we are planning to go fishing on Sunday and Monday then latter in the week. My question is on California Fishing License – does California have a Military exempt or a reduce cost? Also how many days are the temp licenses good for? We went fishing before he left but I just don’t remember what I did then – must be the age.

I believe that being in the Military allows that person to buy a Resident fishing license and not have to buy a more expensive non resident.

This is true. The only discount or break you get is if you're 50% or more service connected disabled.

He can purchase the resident license, I did this when I was statione in WA. I get the 50% or more service conected and I pay $6.50 a year

Tell your son I said Thank you for his service! No matter what branch we all are on the same team in the end.

That is not true. The only military reduced priced license is for military members with a 50% disability who was honorably discharged or retired from the military.
Fish and Game Code Section 70 defines "Resident" as any person who has resided continuously in the State of California for six months or more immediately prior to the date of their application for a license or permit, any person on active military duty with the Armed Forces of the United States or auxiliary branch thereof, or any person enrolled in the Job Corps established pursuant to Section 2883 of Title 29 of the United States Code.
The state of California doesn't do anything for military members at least not for fishing licenses.

When he is home he is still a Ca resident, even tho he is on duty with military. I buy my grandson a Ca lic every year in Dec, when the news come on sale. So you can buy your son one and he will have it anytime he is home and can go fishing.
You can check the ca resident and/or active duty military on the lic, when you buy it. Bill K

I think that means military do not have to be residents.. I will ask my Fish and Game buddy to find out the dealio.

That's exactly what it means CIB. I think Tom here is misreading it. I have buddies from out of state who I've personally taken to get fishing licenses with only an active duty I'd. There's a place on the license where you check a box for active military. There would be no need for such a box if it was meaningless as Tom states.

Heck, I'd buy him 1 if I lived closer and when I gave it to him shake his hand and thank him for service to this country. It would be my pleasure!

Had a excellent time with my son fishing the last two days (Pic's to come)– we will be going out again this weekend and the week before he leaves. He is a resident of California even if he is station someplace else (which happens to be Hawaii after Iraq – real tuff duty station). I picked him up a resident yearly fishing License – it is the best way to go for the money.
Thanks to everyone for their inputs.
PS – he out fished me and he let me known about it too!
