Be a part of history at the 30th WON BASS U.S. Open, Sept. 10-12 2012
The U.S. Open made history back in 1981 with the first ever professional bass tournament offering over $150,000 in prizes payouts. Back then, tournament fishing was still in its infancy, and nothing like the U.S. Open had ever been offered to a National audience of its kind.
Winning the U.S. Open has paved the way for many anglers since it first began in 1981, with Greg Hines being the first to win the prestigious event. The U.S. Open has had 29 champions in its history, and the list is a virtual who’s who in the bass industry. Names such as three-time winners Mike Folkestad and Aaron Martens; two-time winners Clifford Pirch, Byron Velvick and John Murray; and of course, none other than Mr. Bass Pro Shops himself, Rick Clunn, have earned the title of champion during the 30-year history of the U.S. Open.
This year’s 2012 US Open will mark the 30th anniversary of the famous and notoriously toughest west coast tournament ever. Lake Mead, located in Nevada near Las Vegas, has been home to the event since its inception, and will continue for many years to come.
The conditions presented at Lake Mead make for one of the most level playing fields of its kind. The extreme heat and unpredictable weather conditions that frequent Lake Mead, make this event what it is. Rick Clunn has been quoted in regards to the U.S. Open by saying “It is the toughest, most grueling test of an angler’s skill and will, to overcome the obstacles and mental exhaustion which is the U.S. Open.” He goes on to mention, “That if you do not have a U.S. Open title on your resume, you really can’t call yourself a true champion.”
Connotations such as these are what make up the character and strength of the anglers that test themselves and their equipment at the ultimate test — the U.S. Open. With the experience and well-trained staff at WON BASS and Western Outdoor News, combined with the partnerships from our great sponsors, together we strive to make each and every U.S. Open the best there ever was.
Once again our great title sponsors, Nitro Boats and Mercury Motors, have joined forces to offer the 2012 U.S. Open Champion a brand-new, ready-to-drive-away Nitro Z8 with a Mercury 225 ProSX OptiMax package, plus the first place payout earnings based on our official 2012 boat count. Based on 150 boats entering this year’s event, we plan on dolling out over $180,000 in cash to the Pro side, with $50,000 on the AAA side.
The U.S. Open is a shared-weight format, and the amateurs are encouraged and coached by the Pros during the three-day event. The U.S. Open will once again be hosted at the Boulder Station Casino and Hotel, and they are once again offering a discounted rate for our anglers during the event. Make sure to get signed up and involved, as this could be your time to make history.

AAA or Co angler recommendations: Get signed up as soon as possible with your deposit. This will get you on the waiting list. As we get closer to the event, and more Pro's start to sign up, those on the list will be removed and entered with Pro's that do NOT sign up with a AAA. I strongly recommend that as a AAA, you network with your local anglers and tackle shops, to find a Pro who intends on fishing the Open. Once you find someone, ask to be their "Sign-Up Partner" which guarantees your entry into the Open. Otherwise, your just sitting on a list that tends to not move as fast as anyone would like.
