Crupi's Fish was never officially documented by any means. He caught and released the fish before anyone ever saw it. He didn't even weight the fish at the Castaic Mobile Mini Mart, where he usually weighed the majority of his other catches.

In fact, IGFA does not even recognize Crupi's fish as the second largest largemouth ever. They were not provided any legal documentation at all. The websites and magazines that list Crupi's fish do so without verification.

Perry's fish showed in the picture Bassbones posted the link to is from a fish he entered into the 1934 Field and Stream contest and as stated below the photo: "There are no known photos of the world record bass, but Perry won a second Field & Stream contest in 1934 with this 13-pound, 14-ounce largemouth.(Photo courtesy of Bill Baab)"

The only recognized records can be found on the IGFA website that still lists Perry's fish as the record.

Bob Crupi's 22.01lb bass was weighed on a certified digital scale. There were witnesses and there were photographs. DFG was called regarding the fish but Bob released the fish before DFG arrived (it took a long time apparently). That is why he didn't get the State record.

You can read all of the details in the book Sowbelly if you like.

If you want to see the photos, go to this link:

Once again, the New York Times gets it wrong...

In an obituary today for Elwood "Buck" Perry, the father of "Structure Fishing," the Times staff writer claims that Buck Perry caught the world record bass in 1932. How's that for not checking your facts?!!

Rob,

I was living down there going to school at the time, and the shop owner at the Mobile Mini Mart and many others were wondering why bob didn't bring that fish in to the store to weigh it on thier certified scale as he usually did.

The background of that phot is the Mobile Mini Mart, which now is entirely a marine service shop instead of the tackle store witha service shop behind it. Haven't been there in just over a year, so it may have changed again.

I saw that picture on the wall of the Mini Mart in the early '90's and it was not listed as his 22.01. Was Crupi quoted directly in the Sowbelly narrative? I have not read the book yet.

Hey Roger, I read that also

was Crupi quoted directly in Sowbelly about the 22.01, no. They also do not mention the mobile mini mart specifically, they just say something like 'bait and tackle store'.

All the stories I ever read about that fish said he got it weighed on a certified digital scale and I've never heard that bit of it disputed before which is why I made my post to give the story that I had heard/read.

To me it adds up that it was a digital scale and very likely a certified scale considering the photo is in front of a store and the weight was 22.01. Normal scales don't weigh in 100th's. Scales that weigh in 100ths are the kind you see in meat markets, etc. And those scales are always certified.

But I could be wrong, I wasn't there.
