As fisherman we are exposed to the sun excessively which can lead to damage to our skin by sun burn, skin mallenoma and cancer. I know sun screen can help and I do use it, but I was wondering if anyone was uising the sun protective hoods and gloves. Looking for some imput here with your experiences and where I might be able to buy the product in the Sacramento area. My Dad always told me before I play around I should put a cover on it. I think this is what he was talking about.

I use my face covers religiously, they also help to prevent burns to the back of the neck also. I got three of em.

A guy on our lake uses the mask and gloves also a long sleeve shirt.

I turn 61 this year, and never used them. Now I put Med. on my head 2 times a year to burn off the pre-cancer sores that always seem to come back.

A little to late but mine are being ordered this week.

I just got the Simms sun gaiter earlier this year and love it. Really helps with wind burn as well as the sun

Google "UV Buffs". It is something you can keep around your neck or pull up over your face.

I have been using the Buffs for a couple of years. My face was really getting burnt as I was always forgetting to reapply lotion. The early ones were not UV. You can also wet them to keep you cool.
I also use the hand protection gloves that I got at Bass Pro and always wear a long sleeve fishing shirt. All will keep you cooler.

I definitely use a buff and gloves once it warms up! BassKing has some good ones and Simms has some great ones too. They fog up the sunglasses a little but otherwise they feel comfortable and well worth it!

I don't know that I could use the face cover as with sunscreen on my face it already makes my body overheat. I wear the hats with flaps for the ears and neck. I have tested many sunscreens over the years and have settled on Neutrogena. I think I'm using around 85 SPF and its the waterproof kind so I don't need to reapply. I've had basal cell cancer removed from both of my ears from not covering my ears and not using sunscreen inside my ears from when I was a kid to a young adult.

I'm always looking to see if there is a better hat to protect my ears from the sun.

There's a reason why 99% of the guys out in Florida wear sun protective clothing. I have been using "Buffs" and protective clothing such as shirts/pants for a couple of years now. They work great. No burnt ears or back of neck. The large hats work too, but on windy days they flap all over. Some people think Buffs restrict breathing or increase over heating, not true, they do the opposite. Also, the Buffs protect your face from the burn you get from sun reflecting off the water as you work that 10lb'r on a bed. :)

Do the buffs cover up your ears good? The biggest problem with the hats is the wind blowing the flaps. Agree on that. I definitely am with you on the long sleeve Columbia and Wide World Sportsman style breathable shirts and pants. No reason to expose my arms and legs. Not 100% sold on the UV Buffs but I think they may be worth a try. Mostly concerned with protecting my ears. Don't need skin cancer coming back. F Cancer

Been wearing a buff for a couple of years now. They work. Sometimes I forget to pull it up from around my neck but have not had a burnt neck since I started wearing one. Side benefit is believe it or not, it really helps on a cold morning run.

Not familiar with the tackle shops in Sac anymore but know that REI carries them. BTW, the company is based in Santa Rosa.

Yes, Buff's protect neck, ears, face. I second that about working great for those morning runs!

Im only 30 and have already had +10 precancerous birthmarks plucked off me. Dont mess around with the sun! Last year i started wearing a mask, gloves, long pants and sleeves religiously.

mask: Buff UV Headwear
this thing is awesome. only issues are is starts to stink and fogs up your glasses. well worth it though.

gloves: Dr Shade glacier gloves.
only issues is super sharp hooks snare the threads, or if you quickly need to reach in the water they get wet and are uncomfortable. My 1st pair got very beat up, but i got tons of use out of them.

pants: columbia omni wick
awesome

shirts: any sunshirt that is long sleeve will work. i like the wicking mtls.

also, i put spf 50+ on my face even when im wearing the mask. You pull the mask down throughout the day and the SPF helps protect the area around your eyes and temple.

great topic .
I can't count the amount of pre-cancerous Actinic keratosous I've had burned off . Total pain in the butt . One year I let my dermatolgist convince me to use Fluorouracil , its basically a chemical peel . Gets the really small cells that are bad that the Dr can't see to burn them off. Works great , looks like hell for about a month. I even had a really bad basal cell surgically removed , took 4 hrs to get all of it !! Skin cancer is no joke.
Most people are affected in the area's where they have thin skin. ears , eye's, nose etc....
I use a wide brim hat , and/or the one that covers ears and back of the neck . Will consider these buffs for sure.
Here's the crazy thing , my Dr has told me that most of my current skin damage ( i am 51 yrs old.) occurred when I was young , mostly in the teen years . A time when NOBODY was taking care of thier skin. And the really sad part , my 23 year old son NEVER wears sun protection , even knowing the crap I have had to go through , and he's either fishing or used to be on the baseball field all the time thru college- dumb....

I wear either a UV Buff or Simms Sun Armor for the neck/head area. I have Simms & Patagonia gloves. There are less expensive products but they don't seem to hold up as well.

REI carries a limited selection of the UV Buff. Simms is branching into bass fishing the last few years but they have a long history in the fly fishing industry. There are three fly fishing stores in Sacramento. I'd check with them to see what they carry. Kiene's, Fly Fishing Specialties and American Fly Fishing. Fly fisherman have been wearing the UV protection clothing for a long time.

If you don't find what you're looking for, both The Hook Up Tackle & Tackle Warehouse carry sun protection clothing.

I usually wear a long sleeve microfiber shirt if I'm all day fishing on the water.
For face mask, found a site http://www.solmask.com that has a decent patterns of fishing bandanas.
Going to try this shield https://www.solmask.com/products/green- ... 7508055694 for bass and trout fishing.

Thank you fishing1134 for bringing up my old post, especially at a time when Skeet Reese posted his article of his skin cancer with photos. It so happens that I had the same operation on Friday(3-31-17) with the same amount of stitches on my left thigh. Doctors draw an eye on your body where the cancer is located and then cut out the pupil area where the cancer is. Not fun. Cover up guys and wear your sun protection, your life could depend on it.

I always ware a UPF breathable long sleve, hat, glasses and a buff/mask, as well as spf spray. The reflection off the water is nothing to take lightly.

You can always find a good deal on E bay. I've purchased a lot of UPF shirts off there and am very pleased.

I have a rare blood disorder called Erythropoietic Protoporphyria (EPP) which basically in a nutshell, i have missing enzymes in my blood that absorb UV rays and it effects my skin. I can go fish out on a boat all day with jeans a upf long sleeve, i uses the simms gloves/ gaiter buff and it protects me from breaking out all day long if anyone is wondering if the sun protectant clothing work trust me it does. If you go look up epp breakouts they are not pretty.... so I will not go out in the sun without this and i have never broken out with them on. If this doesnt solidify there product for you then i not sure what will. Hopefully a simms or huk gear agents sees this there product truly does do wonders!!

I have been using sun protective clothing now for the past 3 or so years. I have several Monster Tackle UPF 50 long sleeve sun shirts, a couple pairs of Columbia UPF sun pants (zip off to shorts but I never do that except unzip a little to let air in at knee sometimes), several pairs of sun gloves in a couple brands and 6-7 neck/sun protective pieces. 3 of them are Columbia ... they are light weight and are MUCH cooler than the BUFF brand or others that are made of the same material. On a really hot day, yes... it will still get a little warm on your neck and face... but you can easily remove for a few minutes for some air, then put back on. For me... does not make me sweat like sunscreen does.. no mess.. no fuss... MAKES SENSE!

Several of the items can be found at Monster Tackle as well as other places.. regardless where you buy them.. BUY THEM.. protect yourself. MUCH better than sunscreen, which wears off and you have to apply multiple times per day for the proper protection. I don't use sunscreen at all anymore...

Gloves: I have been using these.. held up much better than the Simms ones that tore on me... cheaper too!
https://www.outdoorproshop.com/Glacier- ... cbsglv.htm

Buddy has these and they work he says..
https://www.outdoorproshop.com/AFTCO-Su ... gloves.htm

Gaiter: BEST I have ever used... and I have tried many over the years until finding these...
https://www.outdoorproshop.com/Columbia ... erzero.htm

Shirts: I have a total of 4 of the below... both are excellent for protection, light weight, cool and protect!
https://www.outdoorproshop.com/Native-O ... mftupf.htm

https://www.outdoorproshop.com/Native-O ... -upfls.htm

Pants: These can be found many places.. so shop around for lowest price... GREAT pants! Super light weight, cool, protection...
http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/columbi ... tible-pant

Again, there are MANY brands and types of protection out there... just get protected.. so much better than sunscreen overall.. but you can use in conjunction with sunscreen too if desired.

Good Luck on your search ~

My long sleeve UPF shirt is baby blue. I was on offshore fishing trip and we used live squid for bait. Long story short, my entire shirt is covered in squid ink - which doesn't come out. I was going to get something darker (navy blue or even black) - but does it attract more sun?

darker is definitely hotter . Hanes has UPF 50 long sleeve white sun shirts online for $15 each .
I usually buy three at a time and could care less if they get stained .

Huk buffs and/or Simms full head sun gaiter and sleeves on any sunny day. It's a must. I actually have them sewn into my shirt so the back doesn't slide up the back of my neck!!. I actually feel cooler on a hot day with them on..

I've been using the buffs for many years now and only need to apply sunscreen to my legs (on really hot days when i have to wear shorts) and on that area of my face between the sunglasses and buff and hat. For this, i have a found a great new product that you all should check out. Its the Neutrogena CoolDry Sport Sunscreen Stick. (like deodorant) http://www.neutrogena.com/product/coold ... y=ourPicks
It goes on quick and easy and allows you to just target the places you want. It avoids me having to get liquid sunscreen on my hands or having to spray myself in the face with the aerosol stuff.

Long before the recent west coast popularity of face masks I’ve been using and researching sun protection gear. Even with sunscreen I still burn quickly. I’ve watched my father, who like me worked outdoors and was a passionate fisherman, deal with skin cancer.

As Bassin mentioned, I picked up on what the Florida fishermen were using and started with long sleeves, sun gloves, and a face mask. For over 10 years I’ve tested just about every product on the market. The biggest issue with the face mask/buff is sunglass fogging.

I came upon Gillz-Gear which has a mesh mouth piece that prevents sunglass fogging as long as you breathe from your mouth. They also have a complete line of sun protection clothing. My favorite is a Gillz Face Mask coupled with a Tournament Series Long sleeve shirt. The mask has vents/gills on the side of the neck. As you motor the wind comes inside the neck area. The neck line on the mask has a saddle shape so it stays below the collar of your shirt. The shirts feature a continuous mesh vent along the torso and inside the arms, coolest gear on the planet. Gillz also provides a shirt with a built in face mask.

If you’re serious about sun protection, check out https://gillz-gear.com/ great pricing too!

I too use Gillz Gear. The mask is great with the vent. I have heard Simss is really good too but have not use them myself. The only issue I have had with masks is they are loose on the nose and don’t cover there so well.

I'm a trip believe in sun protection. After fishing a tournament in 2016 my ears got burnt were it took a long time to heal. So I checked out buffs and sun shirts and found Salt, Armour SA COMPANY. , COM they have awesome buffs and sun shirt that work great but they don't make sun gloves so I use Glacier gloves that I buy from TW. Now I don't fish with our my SA sun protection no more burnt ears or neck and arms plus SA is very comfortable witch important.
