Do I need a jack plate to install a Minkota Talon on my boat? Or can I install one with out a jack plate?

Thanks

I think you use the "setback bracket" to install it straight to the transom. Mine is on the jackplate so I hope somebody with a transom mount can verify.

I am on the Minn Kota pro-staff and no, you do not need a jack plate to install a Talon. However, you will need to remove your motor to install the talon mount so that it can be sandwiched between the transom and the motor. You will need to get a spacer for the other side if you decide to use only one Talon.

The new mount that is out is a universal mount and works on all boats. You can adjust the angles very easily. However, the old style mounts are still out if you choose.

I just installed the new mounts on my boat this past weekend...and the new Humminbird 360. The new mounts are quite nice and very easy to set up. My mounts did go on my jackplate through the existing holes of the older style mounts.

Thanks guys for the great info. Now, with that being said. What are the benefits of having a jackplate? Or should I install the Talon without a jackplate?
