Dan Perkins - longtime tournament angler and logger, resident of Angel's Camp, passed away in a traffic accident this evening.

That's sad... Once again it makes us thankful for what we have and to realize how fragile life can be and to really appreciate those we love and the limited time we are allowed on this earth. My heart and prayers go out to his family.

Murphys, CA -- Forty-three year old Daniel Perkins of Arnold was fatally injured Thursday when a big rig lost control of its load on Utica Grade.

The three-axle truck, driven by Larry Clark of Utah, was towing a lightly loaded trailer westbound on Highway 4. While trying to negotiate a curve, Clark's breaks locked up due to the wet pavement, the California Highway Patrol said.

The trailer entered the oncoming lane of traffic and into the path of Perkins' Ford diesel pick up. He was killed instantly.

A Ford Expedition driven by 64 year old Sandra Spicer of Murphys was following Perkins. Due to the blunt force of the trailer's impact, Perkins' pick up was knocked back into Spicer's Expedition. She was taken to Mark Twain St. Joseph's Hospital in San Andreas where she was treated and released.

The highway was closed for two and a half hours and traffic was routed down Power House Road.

I was lucky enough to be paired with Dan last year in a Nor Cal event and had a great day with him. The catching was slow but the stories of the lakes and pepole who fished them were great.
He will be missed.

my prayers go to dans family--my wife and i were deer hunting near dorrington yesterday and were coming down that grade about 6 pm--we did not see any remnants of an accident so it must of happened after that--sure gets me thinking--WOW

I never formally met Dan, but I competed against him many times. He always had my respect as a great angler and he will be missed. My thoughts go out to his family..Johnny C

I had the extreme pleasure of fishing with Dan for the last 3 Stratos Western Regionals and 2 National Championship tournaments. I am shocked and saddened at this great loss.

Dan was a loving husband and father first and an extreamly talented angler that loved the sport and competition second. It was a joy to fish with him and listen to him talk about fishing.

Our trips back to Tennessee to fish the Stratos National Championship were the most fun I have ever had in this sport. The stories we would tell on our long drive made the trip seem much shorter then it actually was.

Unfortunitly we decided to not go back this year because of fuel costs and the starting of Dan's new business. Had I known I would never have the chance to fish with Dan again, I would have found anyway possible to make the trip.

Not only has this sport lost a true champion, but anyone that had the pleasure to know Dan has lost a true friend.

Goodbye my friend, I'll miss you. May the lake be full of 10 pounders and may your line never break.

Tim you said it right when you described Dan as a great champion and a great friend. I have competed against him for many years and it was always great to see Dan. Our paths hadn't crossed in quite some time and I too will miss Dan Perkins. He was the most humble guy you could ever meet and he always figured out how to catch them.
