Has anybody re-powered there boat by buying a new motor from out of state (California)? It seems you can get them cheaper out of califonia but not sure if its worth the risk. Thanks in advance

I recently bought a new motor from Jet-A-Marina in Kentucky. They shipped it to C&C and I had C&C install it. Motor was significantly cheaper and there was no sales tax. Bob's marine in Modesto is reasonable on his motors but he doesn't deal in Evinrude's which is what I was after.

I bought my Yamaha SHO from Andersons Marine in Tennessee, got a great deal and no sales tax. Shipped motor to Bob's Marine in Modesto and the whole deal worked out great!

Repowered with a Mercury 175hp Pro XS. Purchased it from a dealer in Texas. Only had 83 hours on it. I had it shipped directly to Lakeside Boats in Castaic, CA. Perfect transaction, no problems what so ever.

Well, lets see.............
Pros
1 Save money on tax
2 Cheaper ?

Cons
1 Freight cost
2 You don't see it till it arrives
3 If there's a warrentee, who backs it ? The manufacturer or the dealer/person you bought it from
4 what to do with the old motor Is there a core charge, now you have freight cost both ways

For me, there has to be a significant savings to off set the risks

PM sent.
Mitch, I only paid $300 for freight from Kentucky to CA. Dealer mailed in my warranty and its a manufacture warranty and its good. You sell or part out your old motor. No core charge.
Significantly cheaper at least for Evinrude's. I would not have been able to afford it locally or at least it wouldn't have made sense to pay that much more for a 225hp motor. Now if I was going with a Merc or Yammy I may have bought it locally depending on the quote.

Luckily in your case it worked out to your benefit !! That's great !! Did you already have a Rude ? And if so, did all the rigging work out so that you didn't incur that extra cost.

Been buying stuff, motors, props, used motor from Jacos Martine in Tenn. for years. Since 2000 , first one was a 250XB merc.
I have never had a problem with them.

I lived in northern calif. most of that time.
