Lss-1 with HDSLive units

Hello,
Please forgive me in advance as I know there have been similar questions asked but I have not found a definitive answer or one that does not seem convoluted. I have posted this same post on BBC as well.
I currently have two gen1 units with an lss-1 for ss and a shoot thru for 2d. They are both networked and have nmea2000 for sonichub, gps puck and motor readings.
I have purchased two HDSLive 12's and am looking to install. I could replace the lss1 with the AI 3-in-1, get the 7pin to 9pin adaptor for the 2d and call it good, i assume?
I have read several reviews stating that some get better reading with the lss1 and some say the 3-1 is not much of an upgrade.
Before I remove the flushmounted lss1 from my rear setback of my Rangerz520 and fill holes (which im not excited to do) and then redrill to flush mount the new 3-in-1, could I just use the lss1 plugged directly into my Live unit at the console and see what type of images i get? Will there be any software updates i need to do or any difficulty in setting up the lss1 in the sonar installation screen, or any legacy mode issues?
Some have said an impedence adaptor is necessary when plugging and lss1 directly into a carbon or live unit but i'm not sure what this is and after an exhaustive search can not find this part online anywhere.
Any help would be greatly appreciated before I start this process.
