I had an 02 HPDI 200HP. Never a single problem. Runs quiet compared to mercs, and in my opinion more reliable. Its easy to do basic maintenance yourself. I ran Yamaha ring free in every tank of gas as well. AGAIN never a single problem. When I buy another boat, if I have an option between OPTI or HPDI, I will definitely choose the HPDI.

Just bought a 2003 Champ with a 175 HPDI on it a few months ago and so far I love the motor. It had 118 hours on it when I bought it and I have probably added about 10 more since then. Good fuel economy as long as I keep the RPMS under 4500 but I think this is pretty much the case with any outboard. I too checked into the motor online before I bought it and honestly could not find too many negative things about it. Way more positive things out there than negative. I would take it down to your local Yamaha dealer and have them hook it up to the computer and see how many hours are on it and if it has ever had any alarms (Over Rev, Low oil, Etc.). If everything checks out then go for it. From everything I have read if you use the yamalube oil as well as the Yamaha Ring free fuel additive you can expect these motors to go for a long time.

hey guys thanks for your input. i have done a fair share of research, and as you guys have mentioned there are definately more pros than cons regarding the engine. i will take your advice and have a test ran to confirm the hours and any potential problems. thanks again and good luck on the water.

Run the 150 HPDI on my Triton 186 Magnum -- just an awesome motor.

I run the '04 175 on my 18'6" Champ and I've had ZERO problems. The motor has run flawlessly the entire time.

397 hours on my 2002 Yamaha 200 hpdi and not one single problem. I run the oil it calls for and the additive for the gas. Looking forward to seeing what they do to the new 4 stroke.
