Saltwater fisheries bill advances

On Thursday, thanks in part to the actions of anglers from across the country, the Senate Commerce Committee approved the Florida Fisheries Improvement Act. This bill amends the Magnuson-Stevens Act, the nation's marine fisheries management law. It addresses many of the needs of recreational fishermen and women and emphasizes using science to manage fisheries.

While this is a positive step in the legislative process, there's still much to be done before a Magnuson-Stevens reauthorization bill is signed into law. This bill will next move to the Senate floor, where there will be additional opportunities to amend it before it comes to a vote.
