24lbs of Smallmouth

Post by ttb31183 »

Friday was one of the best smallmouth days I have ever witnessed with 24lbs of smallmouth biting in one hour. Sure, it was Friday and wasn't a weekend with tons of boats out or wasn't "official" in a tournament, but it sure was fun.

It happened on Lake Couer d'Alene and all of the bigger ones bit swimbaits in the morning hours before the fog lifted and the day turned into a beautiful fall afternoon. Once it got slick and calm the fishing suffered and we resorted to dragging baits on the bottom. We still caught some 2-3.5lb fish, but after sticking fish upwards of 6lbs it was like reeling in a bunch of non-keepers. This was the day's best, a 5.73lb fish. Also included were a 5 and three others that weighed 4.5lbs.

I was out on the lake with Luke Clausen and we took his boat and focused on sharp drops. The key was having the boat sitting in 40 to 50 feet of water but the areas had to be close enough to shore that you could make a long cast and hit the shore. The fish would hit the baits right on the first deep drop in around 20 feet of water.

I don't know if we'll be able to repeat it, but it looks like we will get another chance at it tomorrow before the weather really turns for the worse later in the week.

WOW what a sack of Smallies a trip that will never be forgotten. My best smallie trip was just north of there in Hells Canyon and I will never forget the action but nothing in size compared to your day.

thanks for sharing it!

All those lines so close together on your meter - is that a good thing? - LOL!!! I have been able to fish several lakes near Spokane and have boated on Coeur twice but have never fished it. The smallie you are holding is just beautiful - perfect example of the great fishery you have!!
