Giant Lineside on the Deps SS250

We've been struggling to put a consistent pattern together over the last few weeks, but every now and then we get the right kind of bite!

On this day we saw the tide would be primo around sunrise, but launched extra early to be in position. It was pitch black and too dark to see my top water plug, so I decided to throw the big Deps SS250. We were working a huge bay with scattered grass. Typically this bay is 1.5ft or less and unfishable. But, with the huge incoming tide we had a good 2-3ft of water, still skinny water but fishable. 4th or 5th cast in the dark and I get hammered. It was so dark I couldn't tell how big she was, but I could tell by the massive head shakes it was a good one. After a short battle she hit the deck and we saw it was a true trophy!

We didn't weigh her, but I'd guess around 23-24lbs. We did get another 12lber in the DWB B52 plug at sunrise and the bite shut off at 630am.

The kit I used was a Phenix Inshore 8' MH rod, Diawa Coastal HS reel, 65lb Phenix Hydra8 braid, 30lb mono leader. Deps SS250 in custom color, with OWNER ST-41 1/0 hooks and Hyperwire split rings.

The water is cooling off quick, the stripers should be filling into the west and central Delta soon. And we'll be waiting!

Yeah they get marked up big time when they come over from Japan. You can usually get deals on Ebay, Japanese tackle shops and even used on fishing forums. I've never paid retail, usually I can find them for $80-$100.

$100+ swimbaits aren't for evreyone. But, I always ask other anglers, how much would you pay for a fish of a lifetime???

I had a couple 30 plus inch stripers follow up my D-bomb while pitching tulles on the Molekummne a mile north of Tower Park. Not sure if that's normal for them to be that far up this time of year...but I got a good look at them right next to the boat....and they were stripers.

Those could be residential stripers that live in the river system year round. We've caught them on both forks of the Moke, all they was up to the Consumnes, even in the dead of winter. Plenty of forage year round, craws, bluegill and salmon smolts...

That section of the S. fork Moke from B&W all the way up to Wimpy's can be really good in the early spring.
