Jighead Swimbaits for Smallmouth

Post by ttb31183 »

I have been experimenting with various sizes, brands and colors for smallmouth this fall. I have had my best luck fishing deep with paddle tail type swimbaits on big jigheads. If I try something different, my results are not as good and I keep finding myself picking up the Keitechs and similar swimbaits on a jighead.

Here is my combo, 4.8 inch swimabait on a 3/4oz head.

I have used everything from 3/8 to 1 oz on the swimbait heads and find the 3/4oz to be the perfect size for fishing the depths I am, 25-40ft. What size and brand jighead do you use for them?

So far my best results have been on 15lb Seaguar AbrazX fluorocarbon since the bottom is so rocky. I am also experimenting with different retrieves and the best is the simplest. Let it fall to the bottom and then slowly bring it back in, just ticking the bottom.

Here is the product of my testing, a 5lb 7oz smallmouth.
