Nourot and Hellesen take Coors Light Cup

STOCKTON, CA. - “Pleasant Surprises” would be the take-away phrase to describe the 3rd annual Coors Light Invitational held on the California Delta last Saturday, as no one expected that the skies - in that region of the delta during the early morning hours, would be clear and completely void of heavy tulle fog so typical in mid-November.

In addition, many had predicted that low weights would be brought to the scales, as over the past few weeks, delta fish have been in transition, and even the self-proclaimed “delta rats” had reported it to be a struggle in finding quality fish.

The biggest surprise however, came at 3pm when the field of 81 teams drove to the scales with good five-fish limits, indicating that either the bite changed for the best, or that these teams stepped up their game to match the level of the challenge.

Nick Nourot and Scott Hellisen proved they were up for the challenge, and indicated to the crowd during the awards presentation, that running all over the delta using R2Sea and Yamamoto baits, was the key to finding their 25.69 pound five-fish limit, to earn them their first Coors Light Cup along with the keys to a new Jeep Patriot, courtesy of Elk Grove Ram, and the Lasher Auto Group.

The team of Wong and Mah, capped off a day full of surprises with the biggest fish of the event, which also happened to be the biggest fish caught during any of the Angler’s Press Outdoors events this year - a largemouth that went 11.68 pounds and bested by a Yamamoto flappin hawg!
