Stockton Fisherman Inducted into California Outdoors Hall of Fame

In nearly seven decades casting in his beloved Delta, fishing guide “Jolly Jay” Sorensen did battle with some colossal fish — stripers that weighed 50-plus pounds, and one sturgeon so large that it could only be estimated at almost a quarter ton.

But the biggest fight of his life might well have been the throat cancer that recently forced him off the water once and for all.

It will be a bittersweet occasion on Saturday when Sorensen, 81, is inducted into the California Outdoors Hall of Fame — just the second Stocktonian to receive that honor....


...All told, Sorensen spent more than 10,000 days on the Delta. But he’s being honored just as much for what he did on dry land.

In 1974, Sorensen became alarmed that stripers no longer could be seen spawning in large numbers on the San Joaquin River. Sorensen called 25 of his closest fishing buddies, a meeting was held, and the California Striped Bass Association was formed....

Tells me a lot about his sense of humor
