McKay, Lute lead first day of Team Championships south

LAKE HAVASU CITY--On the strength of a 5.19-pound largemouth and a hefty 4-pound class smallmouth, Brent McKay and Keith Lute of the Colorado River region took a commanding lead on the first day of the WON BASS Team Championship South at Lake Havasu. Their five fish, weighing an even 16 pounds, led the father and son team of Larry and Jason Marquez also of the Colorado River who trailed with 13.22 pounds.

The “local” region—Colorado River—held all four top spots on the first day, which saw the heaviest catches taken in the later flights. Third place went to brothers Brenton and Jacob lute who tallied 13.07 pounds, while Chuck Taylor and Tim Rath posted 12.46 pounds.

Only Justin Locatis and David Mehalchko of the Arizona region cracked the top five spots as they weighed in 11.78 pounds.

The winner of this year’s event will take home a fully rigged, Mercury-powered Ranger bass boat and trailer with Lowrance electronics, MotorGuide trolling motor and Trojan batteries.
