Fancelli/Paine take Brigestone/Gils Tires Pro opener at Shasta Lake

This weekends Pro/Am opener couldn’t have been much better. 51 Pro’s and 51 Am’s showed up Phil’s Props in Redding for the inaugural Brigestone/Gils Tires Pro/am Tournament Trail of 100% BASS. Weather was incredible and the fishing showed with all but one team catching a 5 fish limit. Almost everyone in the field reported catch fish from 10 -40 feet using plastic worms. The best color seamed to be the always dependable Mohave Oxblood by MF Custom Worms. There also was a Brown Jig bite but worms were definitely the number one bait of the day.

Finishing atop the field was local Redding Pro, Arnold Fancelli. His partner for the day was Brian Paine of Galt. Together they caught over 50 fish, including a beautiful 6.45 Lb. Spotted Bass (Pictured right) that was big fish of the day and anchored their 5 fish limit of 14.34 pounds. Fancelli said at the awards they burned almost 30 gallons of gas, running all over the lake looking for structure that matched his pattern. Once he found it, out came the 6” Mohave Oxblood worm, a dart head, and he started shaking. The big fish came about 9 am, and that was when he felt he had a real chance of winning his first Pro Tournament. When asked about the day, Brian wouldn’t say anything as he know Arnold had another 100% BASS team tournament the next day. “It was great to see that kind of sportsmanship from one of our Amateurs”, said Fancelli, later that night in a post tournament interview. The reward for a great day of fish was a fabulous trophy and $3345 for Fancelli, while $1075 went to Paine. Congratulations to both for at a fun day and to Arnold on his first victory. Second place went to Pro Joe Kopp of Redwood City and Am Larry Wilkins of Marysville. These two also brought in 5 fish, weighing a very respectable 12.14 Lbs. Kopp said they were very patient with their fishing this day, as they would catch several fish on a Senko, then switch to RoboWorms, and then a Tube. Once the fished stopped biting, they would move to another point and start the process all over again. It seamed to be the right thing to do as it brought them $1075 and $1535 each and Kopp made sure to thank his sponsors, Mitchell, Fenwick, Berkley, and Costa Del Mar at the awards. Good job Joe, keep it up.

Third place finishers during this event were Pro Richard Dobyns of Yuba City and Am Kyle Ray of Rocklin. Their 5 fish topped out at 11.59 lbs and included the second biggest fish of the day, a very respectable 3.89 Lb bass. Dobyns spent the entire day on the main lake and n the McCloud arm fish Dart Heads with Dark RoboWorms in 15-40 feet of water. Dobyns also thanked his sponsor Ranger/Evinrude, Powell Rods, and Yamamoto as he was awarded his check of $1650 and saw her partner Kyle receive his $450.

Rounding out the top winners were forth place partners Dave Rush of Palermo and Don Draskovich of Lomita. They both receive nice plaques to go with their winning of $995 and $560 respectively, while the fifth place awards of $670 and $355 went to Chris Laskowski and Rick Leal.
