Jordan/Berrends Back on Top at Berryessa

Saturday was the half way point in the season for the Wine Region of 100% BASS. As everyone checked in at Spanish Flat Resort for what turned out to be a beautiful day, all anyone could talk about was the potential Swimbait bite. What materialized was completely different. Not one big fish on Swimbaits and a very modest bite considering the good weather and water temperatures in the mid 50’s. While most teams reported catching between 15 and 35 fish the average size was about 2 pounds with most being caught in 10 – 20 feet of water. The best lures on this day were Brown Jigs with a variety of trailers and the always popular Mohave/Oxblood Worm. There was also an early morning bite using Rip Baits like the Lucky Craft Staycee or a white and chartreuse spinnerbait.

Back on top after almost two years without a win, were the very popular Jody Jordan of Vacaville and Albert Berends of Folsom. These guys were Anglers of the Year just 2 years ago and their pedigree has returned as they are once again in the hunt for a title. Berends and Jordan spent their practice day in the creeks with no luck so decided to focus on a few areas on the north end and just “Grind it out”. They anchored their winning 5 fish limit of 14.51 pounds with a very nice kicker bass of 3.99 pounds, which qualified as the 4th largest fish of the day. Berends said in a post tournament interview that they used Brown Persuader Jigs with a Yamamoto double tail trailer on one rod while the other guy would either drop shot a Roboworm or Yamamoto Tube. The key “was keep the bait in 15 to 30 feet of water as long as possible and move the bait as slow as you could stand it”. Their patience paid off as they received a pair of nice trophies from Kosich and Callahan Insurance Services and winners check in the amount of $3465. Berends took the time at the award to recognize sponsors, Ranger, Yamaha, Lowrance, Shimano, Persuader and C&C marine for their long time support. Congratulations to Jody and Albert for a fine day and your ret4urn to the top of the leader board.

Second place went sponsors Greg and Ken Kosich, of Concord and Alamo. Proving their passion for fishing is more than a business venture, their skills as anglers were to be rewarded also. They brought in a 5 fish limit that tipped the scales at 14.36 pounds, just ounces away from victory and took home top honors in the big bass pot with a 5.02 pound largemouth. They used brown jigs and lucky craft staycees to catch their fish, also spending most of the day at the north end of the lake and in Putah Creek. A great day deserves a great reward and a pair of those nice plaques and a check for $1140 turned out to be just that. Good job Greg and Ken.

Finishing in third place were Woodlands Troy Winger and Larry Martinez. With a very nice 3.66 pound spotted bass in the bag, they totaled out 13.79 pounds for their 5 fish. Winger mentioned at the awards how they Slow Rolled White and Chartreuse Spinnerbaits all day and mixed it up with Lucky Craft Staycee in the Putah Creek Area of the Lake. Troy wanted to thank Winger Insurance for the support they give and also for the great day fishing with his partner. Their reward this day was two trophies and $820.

Forth place went to Obie Bowman of Healdsburg and Jerod Adams of Cloverdale. These guys are always on the leader board and today’s bag of 13.54 pounds was another good showing. Fishing Jigs for most of the day, they took home $1120, while the fifth place check for $975 went to Discovery Bay’s Jeremy Zipton and Firuz Gizatullin. Thanks go out to all 37 teams who fished this event and we look forward to seeing everyone one on April 7th at Clear Lake for what I’m sure will be an incredible day with many lunkers coming in. Check in starts at 4 am at Clear Lake Bait & Tackle, just behind Red Bud Park.
