When winter bass become sluggish and seek shelter in dense
cover, former Bassmaster Classic winner Davy Hite recommends Rapala’s Trigger X Hodad as the
lure to get results.
While cover may appear dead and brown, it can still be healthy
below the surface and Hite explains that bass feel secure hidden beneath that
canopy.
But the Hodad’s soft texture and slim,
tubular profile allows it to punch through thick matted vegetation, while the
lure’s soft appendages quiver just enough to get the attention of the lethargic
fish without spooking them, says Hite.
In addition, the Ultrabite Aggression
Pheromones impregnated into the bait reinforce the lure’s attraction. Whether
its curiousity, territorial instinct or simply a defence mechanism, bass react to the special formulation
even when they are not in the mood to eat.
Knowing he has the right lure to make them bite, Hite’s only
challenge is getting the bait in front of them.
“I rig the Hodad Texas style, using a
4/0 VMC Heavy Duty Flippin’ Hook and large tungsten weight – just enough weight
to penetrate the canopy – no more,” he says. “Then it’s only a matter of
patience and having the confidence to let the pattern develop.”
