From an outside appearance perspective, they look alike. The spool of the "sf" reels will have "holes". I love my sf's because they cast a lot further than the regular curados.

I use several of my rods for multi purpose fishing. My Powell 711MH is used for cranking a punker and baitfishing. If I want to go with a shorter rod for baitfishing, I use my Powell 735MH.

With the rivers so high, not quite sure where the stipers would be. I fish Hog and Sycamore sloughs alot and have always seen fly fishermen in those sloughs during the summer and fall months.

My "Go To" lure for stripers is a 3/4 oz Rat L Trap (color - diamond dust). I throw it in the delta and if stripers are in the area, I'll catch one in the first couple of casts.

The Magazine Nostalgia section is great. Read a couple of the magazines and it brought back memories. In the 1989 magazine, there's even an article regarding the possibility of a bleak future for the spotted bass at Lake Perris with the heavy fishing there and the introduction of Florida strain bass.

I have had some success with the live pointers. I don't use them as rip baits, but use a "stop and go" retrieve with them. My first fish on them was a 6 lb striper.

If you remove the split ring and use a snap, use the smallest one possible because the action of the lure may be affected with the addition of the extra weight to the front end of the lure. I agree with a 7:1 gear ratio for many of the reasons mentioned. Did slower gear ratio for many years but found that I sometimes couldn't get my lure up on top of the water fast enough before it would foul up, especially when i threw into areas where the weeds were just under the water.

I too have switched to braid for every application. Have not had the problems that I had with flouro -- snapping off a lure or two every trip while casting because the line needed a lot more TLC.
I have a few more birdnest but have learned to clean them up quickly.

I have my best luck with catching stripers and salmon in one trip during the winter months when the water temp drops into the 50's. Usually it's from Nov to Jan.

We've been catching them in Franks. A lot of dinks. Most of the keeper size stripers have been 21-22 inches with an occasional 8+lb fish.

The 1.5 oz that I have been mainly using is clear with a blue tint to it. I've also caught them using 1 oz chromes.

We have been catching them in Montezuma Slough. The smallest one that we caught is about 6 lbs with the largest around 25 lbs. Been catching them trolling and cranking 1+ oz lures. Seen a lot of bait being clobbered in the morning and will be bringing my punker rod to test out the top water action.

I also change out my all punker hooks to Owner 4X. I found a guy on eBay who ties feathered hooks. I sent him the Owner 4X hooks and he tied a bunch of customed feathered in various sizes for me.

I use 65# for Punkers and Sammys and tie the braid directly to the lure. I guess I'm lucky most of the time because I only foul my hooks maybe 1 in 10 casts.

Can't remember who I bought them from. I've checked out the current sellers with custom Lucky Craft lures and their names don't ring a bell. I haven't use them because I've only been on the water twice this year due to one reason or another.
