This years striper fishing rating

Post by Grumpy »

Hello folks, been following your forums and recently joined. Long time striper fisherman who prefers the fly gear but not hesitant to adapt and switch if conditions are more suitable for conventional. Love the Delta and have had many 40 and 50 fish days over the years using the long rod, but also enjoy the upper Sac and have had encounters with some real beasts up there.

Because of the curves life throws at you I have not been able to get out much this year and the times I did were early in the year and mostly uneventful. So my question to the lucky ones able to regularly visit our great Delta, how would you rate the striper fishing this year? Thanks for any replies!

Grumpy,

It's been a hit or miss. About 2 months ago, we fished Montezuma Slough strictly for stripers when the water temp was in the low-60's and landed at least one keeper size stripers (largest 20 lbs) in the first 10 minutes of each trip trolling. I also fished Montezuma when the water temp was high 60's to mid-70's and we didn't even get a bit.

Right now, when we are fishing for black bass, we'll catch a bunch of shaker size stripers for every keeper size striper. My best months for landing the "big" stripers are in the winter months ahead when the water temp drops to the 50's or lower.

I rate it a 3 out of 10. I have been regularly fishing from Broad Slough to MIldred and have been working VERY hard for few fish.

Thanks guys, to follow up on my own question, my son who gets out much more than myself rated stripers this year 4 out of 10 and black bass 8 out of 10. Stripers were mostly small but he caught many quality black bass up to 9 pounds with his best fish coming early in the year. To be fair in his assessment he targets the bass much more than stripers.

Been running as far out west to San Pablo bay. Also alot of 2-3 hour trips when the tides are right this past week.

My boat has more salt on it than a pickled herring ...... and that is about what it looks like right now. :|

DeltaLuke and I were out last night for our first blank from 1700-2200. Started in BBreak and ran west to Collins, Montezuma and Browns area. I only came home to catch the flu on what I think were some left-overs for dinner on the wrong plate that I re-heated.

Water temps are still way to high. 68.7 in BBreak. 67'ish in False and the shoals, 66 last night in Collinsvile area and to the West.

64.2 today down past Port Chicago and the surrounding islands/shoals on the incomming around 1000.

Gona be a good weather change for this Sunday and Monday with cloud/rain/falling air temps.

Hopefully it will shape up for a good Octoberfest for the linesiders with needing beenie's and gloves .. instead of sun-screen and mosquito repellant !

Reguardless - Luke and I had a blast last night.... and that is all that matters ! He just did not like getting ate up as bad as he did from the skeeters ...... Even the dog was tired of them !

You know, we always called each other goodfellas. Like, you'd say to somebody: "You're gonna like this guy; he's all right. He's a goodfella. He's one of us." You understand? We were goodfellas, wiseguys.
