Twenty-five people were rescued early Sunday morning from a fishing boat that was taking on water south of San Clemente Island in California.
The 63-foot charter fishing boat Truline hit a submerged object and started to take on water. The accident happened about a half-mile south of the island just before 3 a.m., according to the local Fox News affiliate.
Coast Guard Sector San Diego's Joint Harbor Operations Center received a distress call and sent crews on a rescue boat and helicopter, the TV station reported.
The 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Sockeye, a patrol boat homeported in Bodega Bay, was launched to assist. A Navy ship operating in the area also helped.
The Navy crew arrived at 4:30 a.m. and helped dewater Truline. A couple of hours later, Sockeye's crew arrived to relieve the Navy crew. Twenty passengers boarded Sockeye, leaving five Truline crewmembers on board to help rescue teams keep up with the flooding.
By 1:30 p.m., the Truline passengers had arrived at the 22nd Street landing in San Pedro, Calif. Truline made it to the Newport Beach (Calif.) Shipyard hours later.
