OAKLEY, Calif. – The Bass Boat Technologies BAM Super 60 Pro Tour delivered twenty-pound daily averages and dozens of keepers at the fourth and final stop of the regular season, as two standouts — Zack Thompson of Alameda and Aaron Britt of Yuba City — rose to the top after two days of competition on the California Delta. Presented by the City of Oakley, Tackle Warehouse, and conservation sponsor Fisherman’s Warehouse, the three-day bass battle now heads into Championship Sunday, where weights reset and the top-10 compete for the heaviest five-fish limit.
Zack Thompson Takes the Lead by Weight
Thompson made the jump into the Day Two top spot on the leaderboard by weight with a total of 42.34 pounds. Qualifying for Championship Sunday, Thompson — who recorded 26 keepers over the course of two days — joins the rest of the top-10 field cut for a final day of fishing to determine the BAM Super 60 Delta King.
For the final day, Thompson intends to remain in the West Delta but switch up how he’s fishing.
“I always tend to like the fall and Frank’s Tract has been fishing really well,” he shared. “It’s no secret, (I’m there). That’s why they call me the mayor – I do fish there quite a bit. I have a lot of intimate knowledge on it, and I fish it a lot different than other guys do.”
Thompson predominantly relied on a ChatterBait but mixed in soft plastic presentations to tempt his bass on Day Two.
“Yesterday (Friday) the overcast (sky) and wind really helped the reaction bite and today (Saturday) it was definitely a lot slower size-wise and methods of catching fish, so I had to adjust some things,” he said. “I think I caught my five fish on three or four different things, rotating through stuff just to get them to react.”
Thompson’s vibrating jig was a dark-colored Cloutier Custom ChatterBait, chosen to mimic a bluegill pattern.
“It is probably the best chatterbait around,” Thompson exclaimed. “It took me awhile to understand the strength of it.”
He fished it on a St. Croix Legend Tournament Bass Power Glass cranking rod with a SEVIIN reel and 17-pound P-Line fluorocarbon and wore his Reefton Pro Costa sunglasses throughout the day.
For his plastics, Thompson used a St. Croix Legend X2 paired with a SEVIIN GX spinning reel, spooled with 12-pound P-Line fluorocarbon to a 10-pound P-Line braid with a Spearpoint Performance GP Finesse Hook.
Thompson plans to again start his day flippin’ in Frank’s on Championship Sunday.
“I think I have a good shot,” he said. “I just have to put them in the boat and have a little good fortune fall my way.”
Aaron Britt Locks In by Keeper Count
Britt held strong on Day Two, maintaining his lead by keeper count with a two-day total of 28 scorable bass to secure his spot in the top-10.
“I felt from the very beginning, the best to make it to the final day was to catch as many fish as you can,” he said. “For one, I think it is easier to do than to catch weight and two, you can save the big fish or the weight you need to win the tournament for the last day.
“It’s kind of been my mentality for the whole season. I have top-15’d every one of these things. This is my second top-10 and when you make it on Sunday, (you can) swing for the fences and do what you do.”
Britt’s go-to for the first two days of fishing has been a shad-colored jerkbait.
“It’s a 97 MR Pointer on 12-pound Seaguar Tatsu,” he said.
He threw it with a 702 IROD Quercus jerkbait rod mated to a Shimano Chronarch 7:1 reel.
“I’m just making as many casts as I can – it’s the name of the game when you’re trying to catch as many fish as you can,” he added.
With weights resetting for the final day of fishing, Britt revealed he will be picking up a flipping stick or topwater.
“I knew from the get-go, the jerkbait wouldn’t win the tournament but it would get me the opportunity to win the tournament,” he stated. “I’ve been fishing the Delta for 20 years, it’s obvious this time of year that big fish get in that grass and the only way to get to ‘em is with a big weight.”
Britt’s not only changing techniques, but he is also changing his target water.
“I am going to an area I’ve never been to before – I’ve never even put a boat in the area –and go see what happens,” he said. “I fished a lot of the same water today (Saturday) and think it will be good. It is an area that people catch fish in, but I’ve never personally been there.”
Britt predicts it will take 22 pounds to win and hopes he can bring home the Angler of the Year (AOY) title.
“It’s so hard to tell with the group of anglers we have – it is one of the more stacked top-10s we have had in a long time – especially for the Delta,” he said. “If I get 5th or better, I can get AOY. It’s a lot out on the table.
“Winning tournaments is great, but winning AOY is the biggest accomplishment and against this group of guys would be really special to me but tomorrow we’re just going to go out and have fun and see what happens.”
Fishing fans can tune in tomorrow to see how it all plays out.
Note: BAM Pro Tour anglers are ranked in Super 60 events by both the heaviest five fish limit (Weight) and numbers of scorable bass caught (Keepers).
First place is held by the angler with the five heaviest bass and second place is the highest keeper count. The standings then continue to alternate by weight/keepers.
Anglers ranked by weight on the leaderboard are denoted with an asterisk.
Anglers add to both of their Day One rankings on Day Two as an accumulated two-day total. Once both days are tallied, the field is cut to the top-10, all results are zero-ed out and the final 10 anglers fish for the five heaviest bass on Day Three to determine the champion.
