BBT in 2020

Thank you guys for coming out. Great job!Posted @withregram • @pottsloco_fishing the first @fishbbt event for the 2020 season went better than we expected.

The start of the 2020 season has smiled on the Best Bass Tournaments (BBT) schedule.

“The year launches with the BBT tide moving as the Openers launch from South to North and thanks to Mother Nature there have been no event postponements, so far,” said Randy Pringle BBT Boss. “The beautiful 70-degree, early spring days that we’ve been experiencing have allowed all season-openers to commence as planned.”

FIRST COMPETITIONS

With quantity over quality seeming to be the case of first events of the year, Pringle anticipates an upswing in weights for upcoming BBT events.

“We’ve had warm days, cooler nights and a full moon, which is a combination for fish to feed for longer periods of time,” he explained. “While this is good for beefing up the bass, it spreads out the time they will bite and that means where an angler may be working on a good, morning bite, the fish aren’t because they’ve been feeding through the night or where an angler may be looking for a big bite pickup in the afternoon, the fish aren’t as tempted because they’ve been feeding all day.

“If you think about it, it’s like if you leave the fridge door open, so you find things to snack all day and then you’re not hungry at dinnertime. With more days of consistent weather, the bite and the weights will increase.”

LOOKING TO MARCH

Each of the six BBT Regions will have an event in March, prompting BBT anglers to visit fisheries throughout the state, including, Berryessa, Lopez, Oroville, Pyramid and two visits to Pedro.

Pringle offered tips for the upcoming conditions.

“Scent, like Berkley PowerBait plastics can be a difference maker,” he said. “If you drop down on them with that, it can be the attractant that makes them bite. Also, vibration and sound are other ways to get a bass’ attention. Tipping the tops of weeds with a Rat-L-Trap can provoke that deflection bite.

“The springtime is the perfect time for a new personal best! Keep in mind… big baits can mean big bites and a 10-inch Power Worm could be the one!

He also made a suggestion specific for the Pedro events.

“Throwing a swimbait around spawning grounds that are next to deep and shallow water is something that cannot be ignored,” he added. “Fish the lane that the bass will use for a getaway when they are spooked.

“Again, this is a big bait tactic for the bass that don’t want to chase and want a big meal. They’re looking to eat up with less effort and a five-inch Power Swimmer is a good addition to the 10-inch Power Worm.”

WHY IT’S DIFFERENT

Bringing fun back to tournament fishing has been the BBT’s tagline and goal through the years. Pringle explained the ways which BBT accomplishes this.

“First of all, we are about fun,” he began. “It’s not a cutthroat showdown. It is a friendly competition. It is a place for an angler to compete at their level with others that may have a little less experience or a little more experience than them, so an individual’s own goals and internal competition is the driving force.

“Another way we stand out is with our event staff. Our staff are not volunteers. They are paid professionals and are here to make your time more enjoyable. Feel free to ask them questions and get help as needed. We try to make things as clear as possible and our FAQ section on our website is designed to take care of most questions that arise, but again, if something comes up, our staff are there for you.”

STILL TIME TO QUALIFY

For those that don’t know, the BBT Travelers Region is like a “build your own” version of a schedule. Choose any seven tournaments, on any fisheries, during any dates to make your own Region schedule… the Travelers Region.

“So, even if you missed a tournament in a specific Region already or cannot make them all in a specific Region, pick events for a Travelers Region and qualify for the Tournament of Champions (TOC),” reminded Pringle. “

DON’T LEAVE MONEY ON THE TABLE

Event entries are one way to cash in a BBT event; but there are others. Pringle reminds us of more.

“Anglers can sign up for Cast for Cash or Bass Cat Quest programs and earn extra,” he said. “There is also Triton Gold and our participating Tackle Store Program.”

BBT has a variety of brick and mortar stores in their program, as well as Fisherman’s Warehouse Online.

AND, there is always the $20K cash to the winners of the TOC.
