Boaters Warned by Coast Guard as T.D. Harvey Heads for Gulf Coast

HOUSTON — The U.S. Coast Guard is advising mariners to take precautionary measures to secure all watercraft before the arrival of Tropical Depression Harvey Friday evening along the Texas and Louisiana coasts.

"It is vital for those who own a kayak, paddle board, jet ski or boat to ensure that they are properly prepared," said Ensign Daniel Nelson, enforcement division officer at Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston. "These essential measures include: ensuring the vessel is properly secured with additional dock lines, cleaning out scuppers to ensure water can drain, properly securing boats on trailers, and if done so easily remove any boat from the water."

Mariners should remove all loose items and ensure the boat is tied securely to the trailer. If the boat is too large to be removed from the water it is suggested that lines be doubled up, extra fenders used and all loose gear secured. All hatches should be secured and the mast taken down when possible.

"These preparations could help reduce potential damage to your property and ensure that the Coast Guard and other first responders can assist those people in need," said Nelson. "Adrift boats are a major drain on resources that could otherwise be employed helping those affected."

Boaters and citizens should remain alert and heed all warnings from local, state and federal agencies. All citizens are urged to take early action to stay safe and protect themselves and their families. For the most up-to-date weather information visit www.weather.gov.
