Copperopolis, Calif. – As scales closed on Day One of the Wild West Bass Trail Kayak Pro Tour at Lake Tulloch presented by Headwaters Adventure Company, Garrett Clark of Elk Grove, Calif. sat atop the TourneyX leaderboard in the 18-angler field with 86.75”. His biggest bass stretched to 20.50”.
Clark launched on the fishery expecting a surface bite; however, that is not how Tulloch played out for him.
“I didn’t have one single topwater fish to show for the day,” he said. “Everything I found was either fan-casting spawning flats or from a handful of bed fish.”
His strategy for the final day of competition is based on a similar pattern.
“My sponsor Bass Union put the biggest bass in the boat with an EWG Ned Head and I secured most of my fish today on Spearpoint Hooks,” he said. “I feel pretty good about Day Two; but judging the behavior of the fish today, I think they will be a little more keyed in on the beds.”
Trailing by just over five-inches, Calvin Vang from Fresno, Calif. is sitting in second place with 81.50” and a big bass at 19.25”.
Vang’s first day on the water was challenging.
“I have fished the lake a few times; but its completely different than how I experienced it in the past,” he said.
Relying on that history, Vang revealed that he was focused on spots that he had previous success.
“Because I ran all my water today, and don’t have any fish remaining to go to, I feel like it will be even tougher, and I will be scrambling tomorrow,” added Vang.
He expressed appreciation for the support of his girlfriend and sponsors to compete in the kayak event. Vang named Abirc, Purple Fox, Poke Mart, Poki Stop and KBIF AM radio.
Rounding out the top-5 were Zachary Christensen of Waterford, Calif. with 80.75”, John Myers of Atwater, Calif. with 79.75”, and Kong Yang of Fresno, Calif. with 77.75”.
Sunday will conclude the Kayak Pro Tour stop on Lake Tulloch. Fans can follow along throughout the day on TourneyX.
