Crappie Stocked in Mississippi Lakes

JACKSON – The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) recently stocked crappie into two Southwest state lakes. Approximately 3,100 Magnolia crappie were stocked into Lake Walthall near Tylertown. Lake Tangipahoa, in Percy Quin State Park near McComb, received 25,800 white crappie.

The magnolia crappie is a cross between a female white crappie and a male black-striped black crappie. The black-striped crappie has a dark stripe along its back from the dorsal fin to the top of the head. The magnolia crappie is sterile making it an ideal choice to stock into small impoundments.

"Crappie is the most popular game fish sought by Mississippi anglers, and make excellent table fare," says Jerry Brown, MDWFP Fisheries Biologist.

The fish were reared at MDWFP's North Mississippi Fish Hatchery near Enid.
