OTHELLO, Wash. – Stretching his lead to nearly one-pound, Darryl Burkhardt of Boring, Ore. maintained the top spot over BAM’s 60-boat, pro angler field, adding a five-fish limit of 18.24 on Day Two to his Day One 18.52 for a two-day total of 36.76 at Potholes Reservoir in the 2nd stop of BAM Trail’s Northwest Pro/Am presented by Limit Out Marine and Tackle Warehouse.
Returning to his primary Day One location, Burkhardt found the bite slower than he had the day prior and moved on to his secondary location quickly, putting his weight in the box by 11 am.
“Because it is not a zeroed weight, I didn’t go practicing, I just stayed on ‘em to try and get the biggest bag I could get, to keep the largest lead possible for tomorrow,” he said. “I’d like to win this thing.”
Heading into Championship Sunday, Burkhardt’s confidence hasn’t faded. He plans to return to the same schools of fish tomorrow to boat another 18-plus pounds.
“My top-two setups are exactly the same – a ChatterBait and a six-inch Senko,” he said. “My Senko is a green pumpkin with a heavy Neko on it. I’m droppin’ it down. I want it to drop really quick to make the fish react on it.”
His ChatterBait is a B-Hite Delight paired with a black Fluke.
“I don’t want a lot of action,” he stated. “I’m crankin’ about a medium-speed. My fish are coming off around bushes. I fish a lot of grass – a lot of tules. They still seem to be on the bush islands. They’re setting up based on the wind and when I roll it around the point of that island, that’s when I’m getting the big fish.”
Eggimann Edges Into Co Lead
Following up his Day One sack of 11.14, co-angler Derek Eggimann of Bothell, Wash., boosted his Day Two limit to 16.66 and moved into first position for the am side with 27.80, separating himself from his nearest competitor by just over one pound.
“First off, I’ve got to thank my boater Cy Floyd,” he said. “He had me in some fishy areas. It just kind of all fell into place. I cannot thank him enough.”
Eggimann plans to stick to the same strategy he used during his first two days on Potholes for Championship Sunday.
“I was throwing a local company’s six-inch Magnum worm,” he shared. “For whatever reason, for me, the darker shades of that big worm was what really caught the better fish.”
Eggimann targeted two- to five-feet of water.
“I would kind of let that sucker marinate right off the edge of the willows, out and away from where most people were casting – out in that money zone,” he said.
Eggimann is teamed up with Burkhardt for Championship Sunday, the final day of fishing.
Fans can join the top-10 pro and co-anglers for Day Three, rooting for their favorite fisherman at blast off and weigh-in Sunday at Mardon Resort or follow online at the BAM website or on BAM socials.
