As a supporter of the IGFA, you understand the role that conservation plays in ensuring the future of our sport. For over 80 years, the IGFA and its supporters have pursued ethical sport and productive science to protect game fish, big and small.
Below are some highlights of our conservation efforts over the past year, made possible thanks in part to the contributions of anglers like YOU!
IGFA Great Marlin Race The world's largest satellite tagging program for billfish
Since the program launched in 2011, we have tagged over 500 billfish in 22 countries and logged enough tracked distance to circle the globe more than 15 times. These tags transmit data to our program partners at Stanford University, who learn more about billfish biology and how the fish interact with their habitat.

Golden Dorado Research Program Ensuring a sustainable recreational fishery for dorado
The IGFA, in collaboration with scientists from UMass Amherst, is in the final stages of completing a study that uses advanced genetics to develop an understanding of golden dorado population structure, gene flow, and the susceptibility or resiliency golden dorado have to human-based disturbances.

Roosterfish Research Program Learning about roosterfish population structure
In 2022 the IGFA began collaborating with Instituto Politécnico Nacional in Mexico and Texas A&M to learn more about roosterfish across their range in the eastern Pacific. Fin clip genetic samples are being collected in Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica, with expansion to South America planned for 2023.

Forage Fish Research Program Protecting the baitfish that feed recreational fisheries
Small schooling fishes like sardines, anchovies, and menhaden serve as the critical link between primary producers and game fish. Since 2013, the IGFA has been involved with efforts to improve forage fish management and data collection

Policy & Advocacy Providing a voice for recreational anglers
From working to eliminate destructive fishing gear to advocating for sustainable fisheries management, the IGFA and its international network work ardently to ensure that recreational anglers are represented and the game fish we revere are sustainably managed.
