One Bass Is All It Takes To Win Tournament On Roosevelt

(Jun. 24, 2003 - Phoenix, AZ)... As tough as fishing has been, one fish can make your whole day. That's what happened at the BestBet Aluminum Boat team tournament on Saturday, June 21, on Roosevelt Lake. Chris Baldwin of Mesa and Mark DiBrito of Phoenix managed to catch only one bass, but it weighed 8.96 pounds. It was big enough to win the tournament, the Big Fish option and $3,880 from the prize fund of more than $9,200 in cash and merchandise.

Baldwin and DiBrito fished mainlake points in the 10- to 15-foot range with Carolina-rigged lizards. They are sponsored by Cactus Ridge Builders.

Second place and $1,402 went to Mike Cancino of Phoenix and Henry Martinez of Flagstaff for a six-bass limit weighing 5.52 pounds including a 2.54-pounder. They fished tube baits in Salome Cove.

Shawn Flanagan and Byron Pittman, both of Tucson, finished in third place. They fished jerkbaits and darter-head worms around the Windy Hill area to catch a limit weighing 5.51 pounds and pocket $500.

Fourth place went to Cody and Wyatt Penrod, also of Tucson, for four bass weighing 5.48 pounds including a 2.50-pounder. They shared $400. They fished jerkbaits and spider jigs also around the Windy Hill area. The team is sponsored by Triton Boats, Complete Marine and J.D. Auto Glass.

Todd Graffa of Gold Canyon and Joe King of Mesa took fifth place with four bass weighing 4.98 pounds including a 2.52-pounder and received $400. They fished Goose Flats and the Mystery Island areas with jerkbaits and Texas-rigged worms. The team is sponsored by Graffa Construction, L&B Construction and Jim Downs Insurance.

Rounding out the top ten were Ray Purtill, Pine, and Buddy Randall, Payson, with 4.82 pounds worth $250; Tim Pavkov, Apache Junction, and Mike Young, Mesa, 4.75 pounds, $225; Frank Angulo and Danny Perez, both of Tempe, 4.53 pounds, $450; Jay and Steve Steitz, both of Phoenix, 4.40 pounds; and Ron Jones, Prescott Valley, and Tom Kilduff, Dewey, 4.31 pounds, $250. Only five limits were weighed.
