SPO Frog Flash: Sun or Shade with Bobby Barrack

For this week’s Frog Flash from Snag Proof, WesternBass went back to the Frog Master Bobby Barrack for tips on frog fish targets. Shaded areas in shallow water are his choice for prime real estate.

FROG FLASH #5 – Sun or Shade

Barrack focuses on shade lines and structure that creates shade. “Shade not only acts as cover for the bass, it also creates a situation for a food source,” he said. “Cover plus a meal turns into a cool, little sanctuary restaurant for bass.”

EARLY MORNING

"Hit any shady spots you can find in the morning; because, the sun comes up in the East, the shade lines off tule walls facing Northwest are a good place to find it,” he said. “You can milk that shade until about 9:30 or 10:00 a.m.”

MID MORNING AND LATER

As the day moves on Barrack’s next move is to structure that creates shade. He seeks out docks, overhanging trees or brush. “That matrix of vegetation that comes together and makes a shade canopy, moss, cheese, etc. – those are the froggy places,” he explained.

DEPTH & LIGHT PENETRATION

Barrack prefers shallow areas and considers 1 to 3 ft a preferred depth range to target. "Getting bit in four to six-feet is a little tougher of a chore and deeper than that, you're dealing with light penetration and water clarity that needs to be accounted for."
