Arizona angler Tai Au has been a force on the west coast for the past several years and recently completed his first season as a Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit pro. He finished the season in a respectable 33rd place in points during his rookie season. He travels the country fishing for bass and knows the importance of cleaning and maintaining everything from his boat, outboard, reels, and tow vehicles.
Cleaning and Maintaining the Boat
As a professional angler with a wrapped boat, Au knows that he needs to keep his rig clean and presentable and relies on a host of Lucas Oil appearance products to make it look great.
"I use Slick Mist all over the boat and wrap to keep it looking good and represent my sponsors right," he said. "I also use the Slick Mist Interior Detailer for my seats."
He likes to apply the Tire & Trim Shine for his tires and has found another great use for the product.
"It makes your tires shiny and looking great," he said. "It's also really good if you have a black boat trailer. It shines it right up and gets it back to looking brand new."
There is also a new product from Lucas Oil that Au has just begun to use, the Fast and Easy Ceramic Speed Wax.
"It's safe for chrome, gel coat and painted surfaces and they recommend adding it every two months," he said. "I've used it on my outboard and Power-Poles and it looks great."
Taking Care of the Tow Rig
Tai Au has spent years traveling up and down the west coast and is now doing it on a larger scale across the country. As a result, his tow vehicle has racked up quite a few miles, over 336 thousand to be exact.
"It has a lot of miles on it, but I'm taking it on tour again next year," said Au. "The key is taking care of it."
Au uses a diesel-engine specific oil called Lucas Oil Magnum Long Drain HD Motor Oil to make sure he is using the best product he can to improve the performance and increase the longevity of his truck.
He mentioned that he is still on the original injectors and believes that is at least partially due to him using the Diesel Deep Clean product from Lucas Oil.
"It keeps the injectors clean and helps it run much better," he added.
Protection Against Ethanol
Au has become a religious user of ethanol treatments like Lucas Oil Safeguard Ethanol Fuel Conditioner With Stabilizers after learning about the dangers of ethanol from a marine mechanic friend.
"I've always used it, but this last year, it was even more important because I was flying back and forth for tournaments, and my boat was sitting for a few weeks at a time between events," he said. "If you are constantly using it, it's not that big of a problem because you are running through the gas quickly, but when it sits for a long period, you are more likely to get the build up and cause problems."
Living in Arizona, Au can fish all year long, but some are not as lucky.
"For the guys who unfortunately have to winterize their boats, it's a must," he said.
While Au is a proponent of using a treatment often, he gauges when to use it based on how and where he is fishing.
"If I'm during practice for a tournament and I know I'll be running through a lot of gas, I won't use it every single fill up," he said. "I'll treat it about once per tournament since I know I will be burning a lot of fuel. That's not as big of a problem as when it's sitting in your tank. It works great, and I even use it for my lawnmower when it is not being used as much."
Taking care of his fuel and the entire system is something that Au knows is important and he will also use another product that his mechanic also recommended.
"I'll also run a bottle of Lucas Deep Clean each event just to help prevent some build up and keep the injectors clean," he said.
Taking care of your equipment and making them perform their best not only helps you save money on repairs and replacements but it also keeps them working their best. This can lead to better performance on the water and less money in the long run. The products listed above are items that Tai Au can't live without as a professional angler.
