Things to Consider When Choosing the Perfect Pair of Sunglasses
As we all know, a good pair of polarized sunglasses is crucial for a good day on the water. Not only do they protect your eyes from the sun and things flying through the air, but they also let you see much better underneath the surface.
Choosing the perfect pair of sunglasses requires some thought. Lens colors, frame size, lens material, and your personal style and needs should all be considered. Here are a few things to consider before buying your next pair.
Picking the Right Frame Size, Style, and Color
We're all built differently and come in all shapes and sizes. That includes our faces, and picking the right pair of sunglasses will vary greatly depending on your head size and preference for fit. Thankfully, we have options.
Quality sunglasses brands separate their frames by size, with small, medium, large, and extra-large fits all offered. Bajío, for example, has a chart on its website showing the different sizes as well as exact measurements for sunglasses so you can determine which size you are.
The frame styles will vary by size. Some feature wraparound designs that are great for blocking light, and others are flatter from the front and let in a little more light from the sides. The choice is up to you, and much of it comes down to personal preference with frame styles and colors.
For colors, standard black is always a go-to, but there are many different options to fit your style. Some are traditional and classic, like the host of tortoiseshell colors, and some are much brighter and bolder, such as the Brown Tortoise Gloss, Ivory Tortoise Gloss, Black Gloss, and Light Blue/Gray Gloss options available for the Bajío Sigs.
Lens Material and Color
For the most part, there are two choices for sunglass lens material: Glass or polycarbonate (plastic), and both have their benefits. Glass is slightly more expensive but has many fans for its clarity and scratch resistance. The drawback is that it is also somewhat heavier than polycarbonate, which is still very crisp. Either one is a good choice, and like most things, it will come down to your preference.
Lens color is where things get more specialized, as each lens color can change what you see under the surface. Some hues let in more light, which can be a good thing sometimes, and others block out more light, which can also benefit some fishing situations.
Bajío offers seven main lens colors, each featuring its LAPIS technology, which blocks out 95 percent of blue light, most yellow light, and 100 percent UV light. The colors include blue mirror, green mirror, gray, silver mirror, copper, rose mirror, and violet mirror.
As a quick rundown of the lens colors, the blue mirror is excellent for bright situations such as offshore fishing, and the green mirror is better for shallow fishing because of its high-contrast nature. Gray is similar to the blue mirror as it is a darker lens, but it does not include the mirrored finish, so it has less flash. The silver mirror is a medium-light lens and versatile for shallow waters and offshore fishing, while copper is similar to the silver mirror but has more muted colors with high contrast.
A green mirror or silver mirror is an excellent all-around choice, but more specialized lenses exist. Two other unique choices are rose mirror, a technical lens that works great for shallow and deep-water fishing. It's a bright pink mirror with excellent contrast for scanning the shallows as you look for fish. Finally, there is violet mirror, a bright and high-contrast lens that is great for low-light conditions and sight fishing.
Cost and Warranty
Of course, cost will come into play and a good pair of sunglasses from a quality brand will vary. Like everything else, you generally get what you pay for, and a great pair will last you for many years.
Hopefully, you never need it, but things happen, especially when you are outside doing an activity like fishing. Sunglasses can break for several reasons, and it's no fun, but having a company with a good warranty will offer you peace of mind when buying your next pair of sunglasses.
Bajío's warranty covers manufacturing defects for the lifetime of the product but does not cover damage. Thankfully, they have options for repairs and replacement for products that are outside of the warranty.
Choosing your next pair of sunglasses isn't a quick decision; you should evaluate your needs and what you will use them for. Luckily, there are many options out there, and whether you are going for function or fashion, a perfect pair is waiting for you.
