A Tweener Takes Logan Huntze to The Top, Leading Day One

Shane Martin Leads Co-Anglers

OAKLEY, Calif. – On a scorching triple-digit day that locked jaws of many of the quality bass on the California Delta, Logan Huntze of Disco Bay found a tweener that was ready to eat. That 12.70 kicker bolstered Huntze’s full-limit to 23.86 and rocketed him to the top of the BAM Trail’s Day One leaderboard at the West Division’s final stop on the DirtyD presented by Tackle Warehouse and the City of Oakley.

“It was the biggest one I’ve caught out here,” said Huntze describing his double-digit.

Unable to narrow down a solid duplicatable pattern for the day, Huntze junk fished his way to the top; but credited a frog and punch bait for his weigh fish.

“I threw a variety of other baits too,” he added. “I actually punched more than I expected to. It (punchin’) hasn’t really been that great, but that’s how I caught the big one.”

Huntze revealed he caught about 10 keepers on a frog; however, they all showed out in the two-pound class and that his 12 came from a small grass clump, approximately 10-feet by 10-feet.

“I flipped into it few times,” he recalled. “I was shakin’ my bait, tryin’ to get it to go through and right when it fell through, that fish slammed it. I knew it was big right away.”

Huntze’s punch rig included a Missile Baits D Bomb, wearing a G-Money punch skirt. He rotated through an array of colors and found success with the bluegill and green pumpkin family.  His D-Bomb was attached to a 4/0 Gamakatsu Super-Heavy Cover flippin’ hook and 55-pound Sufix Braid with a 1 1/4 -ounce Woo! Tungsten weight. It was thrown with a Tackle Tech version of the Bobby Barrack Punch Rod made by IROD, paired to a Daiwa Pitch/Flip reel.

Huntze called the day a grind; but not a grind to get bit. “It was a grind to get quality fish, and I have a lot of room to improve,” Huntze said.

He plans on hitting new water in search of the juice on Day Two

“I went through a lot of dead water today, that I will probably abandon,” he said. “The weather has been so inconsistent the past few days in official practice. I had found fish on a ChatterBait; but with the heat and no wind, I abandoned that. Good bites are few and far between with the first 100 degree day of the year”

Martin Makes the Co Top Spot

In his first-ever tournament, co-angler Shane Martin, also originally from Discovery Bay, fished behind pro-angler Roy Hawk from Arizona for a five-fish limit of 16.94, anchored by a 7.12 big bass. The weight put him in the lead on the co side, more than three-pounds ahead of his nearest competitor.

“In the morning, it took me a while to warm up,” shared Martin.

As the day wore on, Martin did work with two 6.5-inch Yamamoto Senkos, landing four of his five weigh-fish on them, including his big.

“It was pretty lucky,” he shared.

Although he wouldn’t disclose the specific color Senko, he did describe it as a “super-bright watermelon/green pumpkin red flake laminate” version.

“You can’t find it – it’s very rare,” he added.

Martin’s big fish setup included a Phenix FTX Series rod paired to an Abu Garcia Revo Premier, spooled with 40-pound SpiderWire with a15-pound P-Line Tactical eight-foot leader.

Martin is mildly confident for Day Two.  “It’s the Delta, you know, I could have a really good day and then the next day come out and catch eight-pounds,” he said. But I do have a lot of confidence. I don’t really care if I win. I just want to fish and catch a big fish. I like catchin’ big fish.”

With a stingy Delta as their battlefield, Huntze was one of only five of the 139 pro and co anglers to crack the 20-pound benchmark and Martin was one of only five anglers to cross the stage with anything in the seven-pound class or bigger. We anxiously wait to see what a forecast of even hotter temps will have in store for the BAM anglers as they come to the scales on Day Two.

Fans can join the anglers and root for their favorite fisherman at blast-off and weigh-in each day at Big Break Marina or follow online at the BAM website and socials.
