Volunteers Needed for Great Tampa Bay Scallop Search

Participate in Tampa Bay's Treasure Hunt!

The 22nd Annual Great Bay Scallop Search is Saturday, August 22, 9am - 1pm
The Great Bay Scallop Search is a resource monitoring event based out of Fort De Soto Park where Tampa Bay Watch recruits 200 community volunteer snorkelers to search for scallops in select areas within Boca Ciega and Lower Tampa Bays. The goal of the event is to monitor and document the health and status of the bay scallop population.

We mainly recruit volunteers with shallow draft boats, but we have limited spots for canoes and kayaks. We also accommodate volunteer snorkelers without boats by matching them with boaters who have room aboard their vessel.

Scallops are filter feeders, therefore they are highly sensitive to changes in water quality and can be used to measure an ecosystem's health. We are optimistic for a high count at the Scallop Search this year due to the positive news of the regrowth of seagrass in Tampa Bay which is the main habitat for scallops.
