Chatter Baits
Chatter Baits
I can't seem to put these things down lately. No matter how I fish them they catch fish. This is a pretty awsome bait. Fishing them like a jig is the most productive way for me to use them. I'm getting lots a fish on them lately, but I'm missing alot too. Does anyone know why? I mean I'm missing fish that slam it too. Any ideas?
Re: Chatter Baits
That was happening to me as well. I think it is because they are hitting the flashing plate up front. I had thought about putting a treble hook up there to see if it would hook um and to see if it changed the action. It does not look like it does in a pool, the hook just bangs around. But it does some times hook the line and foul the bait.

Are you using a trailer hook? I usually run a trailer hook; if that still fails you can even piggy back a trailer hook or try changing colors.
Re: Chatter Baits
do you guys use a trailer hook on them even when fishing them like a gig or just as a spinner/crank bait also what size trailer hook i use a number 2 gami
Re: Chatter Baits
Its because the hook is too small. Get you some Bobby D chatterbaits. They come with a 5/0 hook. This will increase your hook up ratio quite a bit. The missed bites are usally small fish that are not getting the bait in their mouth, or really big fish who eat the whole bait blade and all. The blade binds up in their mouth and its hard to get these fish hooked.

If you like those then try the Voo Doo Bait by Fishin Magician Tackle Company. Local guy (Chris Peterson) that makes the best quality swimming jig on the market. I have several and they work awesome. Check it out here: http://www.fishinmagiciantackle.com/voo-doo.html

Re: Chatter Baits
I have had better hook up ration using a glass crankbait rod, even when fishing the bait like a jig. When I first started using them I was throwing them on a jig rod and missing a lot of fish. I started using a glass rod last summer when I was useing them like a spinnerbait with excellent results. This winter I started fishing them like a jig again and I did not bother to change rods and I am still hooking more fish than I am missing. I do not use a trailer hook.

Re: Chatter Baits
Some of the chatterbaits out there have a hook that flexes which is not a good thing when your swinging hard. I've never liked the OG chatterbait for that reason. I have lost alot of fish because that hook.
The one I just got was the Stanely Swiming jig and that thing is awesome. It has a big stout hook and I pitch into tules with 25 pound Max and I don't lose fish. The harness on this bait is strong so you don't have to worry about straightening out the clips.
You should give them a try.

Re: Chatter Baits
I don't put any trailer hooks on them. Wouldn't they get snagged fishing them like a jig if I did that? Mike were can I get some of those Bobby D baits at?
