...another beginner frog question...
...another beginner frog question...
When fishing frogs on the Delta is time of day necessarily important? Will it work in heat of day as well as early morning?
Different subject but reading all the wakeboard vs. bassers posts made me realize that, while I have been to the Delta several times, I have never been there on a weekend in summer. Sounds like the place must become a zoo. I have only fished mid week in October and have always pretty much had the place to myself.

Jack,
The general rule of thumb is actually to throw a frog at the heat of the day. That's the norm. The fact that your trying it with success early in the a.m. is good, because your braking out of the mold. Most guys are stuck on only throwing it after 2pm when it gets real hot. That can be a very productive time, but its not the only time to throw a frog.
The best frog guys (not me, 'cause if you've seen BobbyB or BigJim work a frog, you would know i am such an amateur) know that a frog can work almost anytime, and its not always for scumming across mats. Throw it in open water, on edges of mats, and toss it to bare banks at low tide where there's 2 ft of clearing before a wall of weeds appear. it always surprises me how bass can hide up shallow and wont hit anything; but throw a frog up there and twitch it once and WHAM!
When you get real good, you'll find that you can really get a great reaction bite any time of day by whipping that frog hard into brush, tules, under trees, or anything thick. get it way back in there. then let it sit.....sit.........sit........twitch it -WHAM!
Now your power frog fishing!
The key success to a frog (and most baits) is just having confidence to throw it.

I did pretty good mid day throwing a frog in open water or around docks that were protected by the wind. STILL have trouble hooking most of them though

Re: ...another beginner frog question...
you have to pause the hook set, let em turn with the frog in the mouth...then wack em....its all about the pause.
Re: ...another beginner frog question...
Jack,
First off dont let boat traffic scare ya! Also dont be afraid to frog on the open water not just the picture perfect froggin cheese! Now as far as blow ups and when to set It all depends on the strike! Generally when Im fishin open water I swing right away!! No delay just a splash then whack!! If Im fishin the cheese then Ill let the thickness of it tell me when to set. If its med thickness to thin then again there will be no pause! If its a little thick to very thick Ill pause. If its to thick for them to blow up through(Ive had this happen many times!!) then they just bop it about 2-3ft in the air Ill let it sit for about 30 second then work it SLOWLY to a thinner patch! then WHACK!! I hope this helps!!

Re: ...another beginner frog question...
Anytime of the day for sure... If yer fixated on frogin mats, then the heat of the day is probably right,, during the summer time it can be plenty hot enough by 9am on most days for mat fishing. Froggin mats is sure fun, really fun, but it's not always consistant. There are plenty of days when you know the're under there but they just won't commit to comming through it to eat. I've caught more fish, bigger fish, and had a better hook-up ratio in open water or along edges of stuff..... learn to walk-the-frog and you probably will too. It's almost a rare thing for a 4lb+ fish to not completely enhale that bait in open water...
Re: ...another beginner frog question...
haha I know about waiting for the pause but it still comes flying out of the water! That or they always blow up on your frog right when you look down for the trolling motor pedal. Ive heard of some people bending the hooks up a little bit on the frog anyone practice this?

My buddy is famous for catching frogs with frogs. It must have been a very realistic frog, because another frog fell in love with it and wouldn't leave it alone.

Re: ...another beginner frog question...
i guess its better to be lucky than good at times because i missed a bunch of blow ups one day then the next i threw the frog let it sit turned for a second felt the rod pull set the hook and landed a six in a half to get me big fish for our club outting earlier this month. Man did that feel good although if i would of seen the fish eat it i might not have gotten for i am quick on the trigger when i see em

...man just hearing all you guys talk about this is making me want to head up there right now! Never actually used a frog or even heard of it until I came to this website. I live in Southern Cal and the local lake down here develops some weed mats in the summer though probably not like the Delta. Gonna head out Sunday local and may have to try it to see if it might work here also. Not due to make it up to the Delta until mid Oct. but....like I say...wishing I was up there now.
thanks for all the feedback...it really helps for someone who has no experience to get an idea of what to expect.

Last week on the Fun Fishing show Alan Fong and Warren Trumbly were fishing the big mats up around Lost Slough. Warren got a hit and a blow-up at the same time. Caught the frog. Missed the bass.

Re: ...another beginner frog question...
i remember my first frog fish was fishing two skulls. got hung up on a submerged branch. tell my partner to slow down a bit because i got hung up. started jiggling it loose right to the very end of the branch. one good tug and it popped out. as soon as it landed about a foot from the branch. BOOM! 5#er. what was funny was that my buddy was joking around saying, "i bet there's a fish just looking at that lure right now saying "that frog is f***ed"!"
Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you'll get rid of him for and entire weekend.
