George,

I use the Avid series rods and I have 2 topwater rods:

AVC68MXF, 6'8" M X-Fast, 8 - 14lb line, 1 ⁄ 4 - 5⁄ 8oz lures

Great all around topwater rod and can also double as a light jig & worm rod. I throw some 3/4oz baits on it without a problem.

AVC66MHM, 6'6" MH Mod, 10 - 20lb line, 3 ⁄ 8 - 1oz lures

This is a crankbait/rip bait rod, but it also does a great job throwing topwater baits like poppers, prop baits and small wakebaits. This rod may have a moderate action, but it has plenty of backbone!!! I also throw spinnerbaits with this rod...it's one of the most versatile rods I have ever owned.

For spinnerbaits, I also use the AVC66MHM above and this rod:

AVC62MXF, 6'2" M X-Fast, 8 - 14lb line, 1 ⁄ 4 - 5⁄ 8oz lures

I use this rod when I am making short casts tight to cover, as the shorter length helps you to be more accurate with your casts. I mainly throw a 3/8 oz spinnerbait with this rod and it really works well.

I don't really throw the big spinnerbaits, so the above rods cover it all for me. But if you are looking for a rod to throw those types of baits, you could go with either of these depending on the action you prefer:

AVC70MHF, 7' MH Fast, 12 - 20lb line, 3 ⁄ 8 - 1oz lure

AVC70MHM, 7' MH Mod, 10 - 20lb line, 3 ⁄ 8 - 1oz lure

All of the Avid crankbait rods are moderate action. The fast action is not going to have as much flex in the rod as the moderate crankbait rod, but it would probably be the better choice out on the Delta.

I only use the Avid series rods, but have had some of the Legend Tournament rods and the same thing would apply to those rods. There are some far more knowlegable St Croix guys than me who visit this site and I am sure they will chime in as well.

Converting all of my rods to St Croix was one ofthe best decisions I ever made!!! Hope this helps some! 8)

www.stcroixrods.com If you look at the site and go to the Bass Tournament series they will break it down which rod to use for each situation aka the blue rods. Also depends on how big your gonna go on topwater. I use my punkers, frogs, big spooks, etc. on the Slopn' Frog rod which is a 7' Heavy Fast, blades I use an Avid 7' Med fast or I use the blue rod Sweeper spinnerbait rod. Check out the site or go to Escalon Bait and Tackle, or the Bait Barn. pick them up, put em in your hand. Mike

I have both the LTB Topwater (LTBC68MXF), 6'8", med power, xfast action & the LTB Sweeper Spinnerbait (LTBC70MHF), 7', med heavy power, fast action.

For topwater, guys seem to like either a shorter (6' - 6'6") fast or xfast action or a 7' moderate (crankbait) action rod.

IMO, the 'topwater' works very well for poppers, sammies & super spook jrs. It does work for super spooks but I liked the 'teaser' (LTBC70MF) for that better. I prefer using a crankbait rod for topwater now but IMO, the med power rods do a good job if you set your drag properly. If the fish surges close to the boat, it has to be able to take a little drag.:)

I used the Sweeper Spinnerbait for blades 3/8oz on up. I also liked it a lot for pitching t-rigged plastics (beavers, worms, etc) on the edges of tullies. It was also a decent jig rod up to 1/2oz.

BTW, I have a LTB topwater, sweeper spinner & dropshot for sale in the classifieds. :)

They are all good!

I would definatly recommend the blue Legend Tournament series.

6-10#, 8-14#, 10-17#, 12-20#: 8-14 is the Top Water series.

Later; Big Ed!

George i am not an expert but have mostly avid series rods however for super spooks medium wake baits , big popper baits, buzzbaits and even heavier spinnerbaits I currently use premier 7 foot GLASS rod PGC70MMF 10-17# 1/4-3/4 it is under 100$ i use braid and a curado 7:1 reel . i can cast like a mile almost the rod loads up nicely and i don't seem to loose fish like i did with graphite rods.

I have used my avid 7' MHF rod and it was a close 2nd i just pulled out the hooks too much or didn't get them hooked even with mono i suppose if i went to MF or MM rod it would be the same as the glass rod almost. like mike says go check the rods out. Walton's pond in san leandro has the ST CROIX lineup even the new MOJO rods, they are nice too. good luck and let us know what you choose !

Has anyone tried the Mojo Bass rods? I’m curious how they stack up against other $100ish rods.

I just bought 4 of the Mojo rods and I am very pleased with them. I had a couple Avid series before and these are similar in feel and easier on the pocketbook. I have caught fish on 2 of the rods and I am pleased with them so far.
