Lake San Vincente was a calm and beautiful day perfect for a relaxing kayak tournament day. It was a cold morning but warmed up nicely as the day progressed. Once the lines were officially out and all the judging was completed, Shane LemMon won the American Bass Association season opener at San Vincente with a three fish limit that measured 54.00” besting second place by 3.25”. Saturday, the day before the tournament, LemMon located fish shallow with a wacky rigged 4” pink Yamamoto Senko. On Sunday morning, LemMon arrived at this primary location and quickly caught his limit on the Senko rigged with a VMC clear size 7 cross over ring with a VMC size 2 weedless Neko Rig Hook.

“The fish smashed the 4” Yamamoto Senko.”

His first fish of the day was a 17.25”. LemMon moved to a location with a tree line in 20 to 25-foot of water where he used a drop shot rigged 6” Robo worm in the Morning Dawn color with a size 2 Robo Rebarb hook Texas rigged with a ¼ ounce weight. LemMon worked a 50-yard stretch of the tree line. LemMon’s focus was to work the bottom of the tree’s base. The key was to use a longer leader where he would shake the bait and then dead stick it.

“The fish would eat the drop shot rigged worm when it was sitting still on the bottom.”

Fishing overall was good because almost everyone caught fish even though it was in January. Shane LemMon thanked his wife and kids for all their support with his fishing. LemMon also thanked his sponsors Bonafide, Mortoguide, Dakota Lithium, Yak Attack, Yamamoto, Bill Lewis, Buck Eye Jigs, Steelshad lures, Cuda, Phenix Rods, Rogue Gear Co, One Objective, Sniper Marine, Kayak Fishing Supplies, Waterland Co, Fast Track Rentals and Atomic Fishing Jerseys.

Brian Leppke captured second place with 50.75” for his 3 fish limit. Leppke fished a hundred-yard stretch of bank that was located on a point that separated two spawning coves. Leppke fished in 18 to 60-foot of water with a 4” handed poured worm on a drop shot rig that accounted for all his fish. He was using a 12-inch leader and 7-pound test line. He focused on the base of the trees with rock for his fish.

“I caught 15 to 17 fish throughout the day in that hundred-yard stretch.”

Leppke noticed that the lake was rising because of the water coming into the lake. Leppke thanked Performance Tackle for all their support.

Daniel Martinez captured third place with 50.25”. Martinez had practiced San V since mid-December. He was able to only catch 2 fish on reaction baits, so he focused on finesse baits during the tournament. Martinez first and second fish were both small and released them without submitting pictures and then found himself without a bite for the next two hours. Martinez moved to a new area and caught a limit on a Neko rig.

“With thirty minutes to go I made a move and culled out a fish.” said Martinez, “With just three minutes left, I caught another fish that moved me up to third place.”

Martinez last culled fish was 16”. He used a Neko rigged 6” green pumpkin with blue to account for all this fish. Martinez thanked his mom and dad for all their support with his fishing career. Martinez also thanked his sponsors Hookupbaits and Submission Fishing.
