Clear lake has been one of the best fisheries in the country for the last several years. The lake has been fishing fantastic with five fish limits weighing in over 30 pounds during tournaments and the guides have had days with their clients that pushed 40 pounds. This year the minnow style baits have dominated tournaments with the larger glide baits helping with the mega bags. When it comes to crazy weather, it seems like a kayak tournament is scheduled for that day. This year, the normal for most kayak events, angles have had to deal with fierce winds and crazy rain. During the team event, the weather was windy, and rain was possible, so the anglers had to adjust for the wind and launch accordingly. Yak-a-Bass rules for this event was open launch, so anglers paid close attention to wind direction and practiced in those area that were protected from the wind.

The team of Reed Frazier and Nick Doring (Quality Control) was victorious at Clear Lake. They dominated with the strolling technique to best a field of 67 anglers. They had found a few key docks that held the winning fish.

“My game plan was to find a location that was protected from the wind.” stated Frazier, “My main location was blow out with huge waves crashing in the area.”

“I picked up a big fish on the stroll on the Mooch minnow that was around 7 to 8 pounds, it wrapped around my bow mount trolling motor and jumped and came off when it hit the side of the kayak. This was the first time that I had used a bow mount trolling motor.”

“I had not fished that area, but this was about the only area that had docks and was fishable.” exclaimed Frazier, “I had found fish near docks in about 5 to 8-feet of water.”

“I was using the 1/16 ouch weighted jig head with the Mooch minnow.” remarked Frazier, “The first fish I had caught was under a dock and the second fish was between two docks, I saw both fish on the FFS.”

“The biggest fish I had caught was with a group of fish that were roaming.” mentioned Frazier, “The docks that were better were the docks near the back of the cove with several slips in the area.”

“The bite slowed down when the sun came up compared to when the cloud cover was overhead in the morning.” articulated Frazier, “My team partner Nick Doring and I both caught a limit of fish and two of Nicks fish accounted for our limit. He caught fish on a drop shot near a dock.”

“Doring was fishing a school of fish that were eating bait fish in the area.” declared Frazier, “Fishing was good for us in the area that we fished due to the forecasted wind and rain.”

Frazier and Doring both thanked Yak-a-Bass for hosting such a great event. Doring thanked his wife for all her support.

The team of Drew Boles and Paul Mata (Slaughter Houze) finished in second with a total of 101.00” besting third place by their big fish a 23” toad. They tossed swimbaits and the LV 500 to capture their second-place finish.

“Early in the morning, I caught a limit of fish on the LV 500.” claimed Boles, “I was in 6-feet of water casting out to deep water to catch fish on the LV.”

“There was a small area that the fish were ambushing bait.” pronounced Boles, “I was ripping the LV with big rips to get my bites. It seemed the harder I worked the bait the fish would react to the bait better.”

“Once that bite stopped, I started to fish in 8 to 10-feet of water and slowly worked the bait along the tulles.” expressed Boyles, “I had to spot lock on the tulle point and cast repeatedly in the same area to get the fish to bite.”

“That was my day, I fished two locations all day.” said Boyles

Boyles thanked Bill for judging, James for hosting the event, my buddy Garrett over at G-RATT Baits, Switzer Enterprises-Secure Connect SSL VPN-if you got computer issues, we got the solutions.

Third place went the team of Isaish West and Shaun Leytem (Shisiah) with a total of 101.00”. They used a frog in tulles to catch their nice limit.

“I had practiced the weekend before and found fishing tough; I only caught 3 keepers.” proclaimed Leytem, “I relaunch and found a bed fish near Nice.” I relaunch once again and headed farther North.”

“My partner had caught a few fish on a frog, so I started North and worked my way towards Lakeport.” reported Leytem, “I caught two fish on a frog quickly on the black frog. I changed up to a white frog and started to get more bites.”

“The area I had found had hitch and duck weed pushed up against the trees and tulles.” pointed out Leytem, “I had to make repeated cast to the same area to get the fish to bite.

“The angle of the cast was the key to get the fish to eat the frog.” alleged Leytem, “I did have two fish blow holes in the duck weed and I would follow up with a 6” Senko to get those fish to bite.”

“There was only a few very few specific locations that the fish were set up on.” informed Leytem, “When they ate the frog, they had it in their crushers, they ate it really good.”

Leytem thanked RB Bass, Propoint fishing lures, Doybin’s Rods, GSN outdoors, Yamamato baits, Frenzy Baits and Pure fishing, Lear Drywall,
