Question of the day

Post by mac (Doyle McEwen) »

Using a suspending crank/jerk bait, how does current change the way the bait reacts..I know line size and retrieve speed and casting distance makes a difference on the depth, but does current have any effect on performance..Normally I try to run the lure with the current, as I believe that is the direction most bait fish will be running..I know most lures are tested in a swimming pool type environment, thus no current..So if a lure says it will suspend 3 to 8 feet, what can I expect with current..Will current speed make a lot of difference in depth attained..I guess you might have figured it out, but I don't have that much experience with jerk/rip baits other than in virtually zero current situations..

Ok...I'll give it a try...

When I'm going down the levee there are weedlines, tule walls and clumps of isolated tules, and breaks. I'm fishing into the current, but always watching for places the current flows past a tule point, clump or opening. If I can work the ripbait to it's depth in the current and pause so it will be carried directly past the wall, clump, opening or whatever...all the better. A few well timed short twitches....BAM. I don't care so much how the current affects the action...it delivers my "meal" on a platter 8)

Riplip, thanks for attempting to answer..The scenario you describe wpuld fit in well with the Delta, no doubt..It wasn't the action of the lure I am really concerned with, but the possible difference in attainable depth for a suspending bait in current as compared to still water..There may not be a difference, I don't know..I guess the best way to find out is toss them and see..

I think that may have more to do with salinity and temperature than current...up to a point. If the current is very strong it may limit the depth attainable.
