High Speed Reels

Post by Wolfeman »

What techniques benefit from an 8:1 reel? And why?
And, why shouldn't I use one for everything except cranking?
Thanks,

i like my Daiwa Tatula in 7.3 best but also have a few 8.1. I mostly use it to: 1) take up slack line when fish is on, keep tension on; 2) reel line back quickly so i can cast again - to maximse my number of cast especially when e.g. flip, jig

The downside of this is i need to remember to SLOW down if i want to reel eg. spinnerbait; keitech or chatter; else it's too fast when fish wants it slow.

That pretty much said it all.

I run 7.1s on my frog, flip, punch & topwater rods to pick up line quickly and pull fish away from cover.

I run 6.4s on my crank, chatterbait & spinnerbait rods because I tend to overpower those baits on anything more high speed.

An 8 gear ratio would be nice for punching, frogging & flipping. I may pick one up soon and try it out.

Gear ratios can be deceptive at times. One really needs to look at line retrieved per handle turn to make the best comparison.

That said, in general, an 8:1 gear ratio
is best at any app where pickin
g up line quickly is at a premium. Bottom contact apps such as senkos, jigs, carolina rigs, or burning a squarebill is where they really excel.

Punching, frogs, other topwaters, and deep cranks I still prefer a 6 or 7:1 as some 8:1 reels can suffer from a loss of power (torque) do to excess side load.

Shimano's X-Ship feature minimizes side torque or load and thus their 8:1 reels do not suffer from it as some other makes do. I'm just not able to slow down enough to be effective at times, so I choose to limit my 8:1 use to bottom contact apps and they rock at it!
