Oroville Lake and debree

Post by Bill kizer »

Lets say you're going 60 MPH, nice clean water. Directly in front of you lies a small debree field of what appears to be small limbs. You are going to hit it, no way around it. What do you do? Cut the throttle? Or let it rip?

Bill. Having worked in a small boat shop, I have seen more and/or major damage caused by hitting debris at full throttle, than I have by shutting down and then proceeding. Each situation might be
different of course, amount of debris, etc. But I for one will shut
down and proceed with caution. At least that is my take. Bill K :)

That's a tough one for me!! Many times you rum up on small stuff only to find something BIGGER floating or just under the surface. Me, I tend to play it safe rather than sorry and cut the throttle. I try to go around it if at all possible. I've made the mistake in the past of running fast through only to find and hit something I shouldn't have!!!!

Lake Oroville is one of the worst lakes for having very large debris float sub-surface. Railroad ties 6"to 18"under the surface are somewhat common, and for some reason the Feather River seems to carry in very large blow downs and root-wads that want to barely stick out. If it were me I'd back off the throttle for a while until the water level drops and they pull the booms around to gather the debris. I have witnessed several bad collisions over the years.

Take it easy always. You don't need a big repair bill, the few extra minutes it takes to take extra caution will pay in the long run. There are some large areas of debris right now...use caution.
