best flip/pitch reel....curado?

Post by bustout »

is the standard curado still available?

is the super free version that much better? its almost double the cost of what i paid for my curado201's....

for $199....is it worth it?

are there any reels close to $100 that perform as well as the std curado?

thanks in advance

I believe that the Castaic BSF is the way to go ... it's basically the same reel as the Curado BSF, but has the 'flipping switch' mechanisium.

Bustout,

A friend of mine turned me on to the Accurist, this has a flipping switch. Take a look at one, you might find its better than the curado

I go with the Castaic the Lefty model

Post by ash »

I use the left handed Castaic for flippin and pitchin. It is slight bite heavier then the curado in terms of wieght but the flippin and pitchin bar is great and its super free.

The cost I believe is around 135.00

I have not fished the new Curado so I can not comment on that.

i *hate* my accurist with the flippin switch, hell I'd hate it even without the flippin switch. the thing is like a light switch, either the spool tension is all the way on or all the way off, no inbetween. and yes, I have adjusted it, oiled it, rebuilt it, massaged it, spoken nicely to it, cursed it, and then placed it in my bag as an emergency backup. would make you a nice deal on mine if you wanted it. best waste of $100 to date.

I prefer the original Castaic with the full thumb bar for pitchin and flippin. The new super free seems the wear on the side of your thumb if you do much pitchin.
And I do not think the super free is necessary for pitchin. I can pitch a jig almost as far as I can cast it with the original.

I have a Castaic(one of the new ones) it is only about 2 months old maybe used a couple of times. If anybody wants to buy it $100.00 works for me. Save ya about $80.00 after taxes and i believe they are $ 169.00

When did you buy your Accurist? Is it the PT 500 or is it the Red/Blue or Gold one?

The PT 500 is awesome if you are having problems with it.. Quantum will fix or replace it for free.. IF it is one of the REd/Blue or Gold ones.. well, those are $79 and perform about like $79 reels!

My experience with the Accurist

Gotta chime in and relate my experience with the Accurist too. I was given a dealer sample of the original version of the AC500PT and fished it for a short time until it seized up. It sat around for a while before I decided to send it to the factory for servicing and during that time a newer version had come out. To Zebco/Quantum's credit, I was promptly sent a free replacement and it was the new version of the AC500PT. I liked the size and styling of the new version, and its smoothness seemed decent enough.

I took that Accurist on a trip to Brazil (along with the new Curado 200DHSV, an older Curado 200BSF and two older Chronarch 100SF reels). All of the reels received a good workout the duration of the trip (casting mainly Super Spooks and big woodchoppers) and they were all subjected to daily downpours while sitting on the deck of a tin boat. They all held up against hard running fish but the constant rain must have seeped into the Accurist and flushed out some of the lubrication. I relubed the the spool and pinion bearings but that didn't entirely cure the screeching during my casts. Another thing about the Accurist: the retrieve doesn't seem as smooth as it was out of the box. On the positive side the drag on the Accurist was strong and smooth and held up very well. The Shimanos all held up fine and did not require servicing of any kind--they are all as smooth as they were when new.

So in retrospect, I'm not impressed with the Accurist. It's the same price as the old Curado 200B and in my opinion, it's not as good a reel. Try this: hold the Accurist's handle/crank so that it doesn't move and rock the spool with your other hand. You'll find a LOT of slop, way more than what you'll find on a Curado. I'm sure that functionally it doesn't really matter but the Curado is a tighter reel, and I like that. I'm sure Zebco/Quantum will return the reel to "as new" state if I sent it in for servicing but as I said earlier, I'm not overly impressed with the Accurist.

Fair enough... was it the new 500PT or the older 500PT
Take a look at this picture and tell me if this is the one you have?

Tom,

As stated above, the model that originally seized up was the older version. The defective reel was sent back to Zebco/Quantum and they replaced it with the new, current version. The newer version was the one I fished in Brazil.

I don't have any complaints about Zebco/Quantum customer service--they were prompt and sent me the current model, which was quite nice of them. I'm just not overly impressed with the AC500PT, that's all...

Ill chime in here because every one has mentioned Quantium or Shimano, I'd like to talk about the Daiwa Advantage (TDA) Super Tuned reel. Its just plain awesome Ive had a few since they first came out and they are just awesome. Feel good in the hand very smooth reels Super drag systems on them I have no complaints with any of them and Ive had em over a year now. Just another reel you may want to play with next time you are in your local tackle shop.

The best pitching reel on the market today is sleeper. I would be willing to bet most of you have not heard of it. It is a Daiwa Coastal Inshore CL153H This is the salt-water version of the 153HST mentioned by Tom but the main difference is it has Corrosion resistant ball bearings. These bearing make the most free spooling reel I have ever seen. Both Gary Howell and myself will be using these reels on our flippin sticks this year. Your going to want to take a look at this one.
