There are guys far more experienced than me on here, but I flip with a 7'4" 5 power Champ extreme, 20lb flouro, with either a 1/2 oz jig, or a Texas rig Beaver. I keep it pretty simple, spend more time worrying about where I'm throwing rather than what I'm throwing.

6 inch black w/red flake senko, 5/0 hook, braid, any rod and reel. Just toss it in the middle of the tullies and let it sink

your choice rod and reel, 15lb trilene big game or 17lb bass pro both mono, 1/2 oz tungsten bullet weight pegged, gamakatsu offset round hook. and for baits zoom baby brushhog or zoom speed worm both either green pumpkin or watermelon with red flake. for a rod and reel, check out the kastking flipping rod and the kastking stealth reel on their website or on amazon

Those answers above aint wrong - you'll just have to see what works for you. The first question is are you looking to truly Flip or more of pitching ? Flippin is a fixed amount of line with the bail closed and pitchin is more of a backhand roll cast to ease the bait slowly into a pocket. I think most guys are pitchin a lot more then flippin these days so here is my recommendation for a starting pitchin setup.

A 7'3 Heavy Action rod like the Abu Veritas 7'3 Heavy https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Abu_Gar ... -AGVR.html

A 7:1 Reel like the Abu Garcia Revo STX or SX https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Abu_Gar ... -STXG.html

20lb Triline 100% Flurocarbon - This is going to hold up well around the riprap, tulles and grasses - when you start punching heavy vegetation you'll want to up this to 65lb Braid.

A strong hook like the owner J hook (which is what I use) or a Heavy Flippin hook.

For baits its tough to beat baits like the 6" Berkley General in Green pumpkin or Black n Blue. Along with Creature baits like the Beaver or the Berkley Max Scent Creature Hog - in a greenpumpkin red or a black n blue.

For weights the lightest you can get away with I find myself moving between 1/8th - 1oz - i think a 3/8th oz weight is a good start for sparse grass and tulles - and dont forget the bobber stops to peg that weight.

Same with jigs Canopy Grenades makes a great flippin jig - A brown Jig like the DK Special and a Black n Blue jig in 1/2oz and 3/8oz

To me this is a Pitchin 101 setup for the delta with these 4 baits and that setup youll be primed for pitchin success out on the river. That and maybe a guide trip with Vince Borges or Randy Pringle to start to see how to read the current and water.

Wow! Great post!
And Chad is right. Being able to put your bait where you want it quietly is key. Pick a rod that lets you do that, and you will get bit. Then you can figure out if it's heavy enough for what you're fishing.

When you say starting set up I'm thinking novice so here's my advice. You will definitely progress to braid and flouro as you gain experience and get more specialized but for starting out it's all about the basics...so K.I.S.S. Mono is the best all purpose line and what we all were using 20 years ago. 15lb Trilene Big Game is an ideal place to start , its strong, tough, reliable, forgiving, available everywhere, and dirt cheap. Learn to tie a palomar knot, frequently check your line for nicks, cuts, retie often, and re-spool often. Flouro can be hard to handle and frustrating for a beginner plus its pricey and braid is just not good around rocks. Don't get me wrong, I have 8 dedicated flip/pitch rods with 17/20 flouro and 50/65 braid on my boat but as a beginner just keep things simple with mono. As for hooks, a simple 3/0 round bend off set shank hook will cover almost everything you need...Gammy's are great but those cheap black nickel Eagle Claw hooks at Walmart with aren't bad either. Focus on three basic presentations: a weighted texas rig with a creature bait, a weightless stick bait like a senko (weedless of wacky), and a bubba drop shot. Grab yourself a bag of 3/16oz and 1/4oz lead bullet weights (don't waste $ on tungsten until you get into punching) for the T-rig and a bag of 3/8oz lead cylinder weights with line clips for drop shotting. If you want to peg you bullet weight, just use a toothpick...it's fine when using mono. For the bubba shot all you need is a bag of 6" Fat or 7" Robo Worm in MMIII. For senko's stick to the 5" to start, you get 10 her bag and they catch a lot of fish. For creature baits, sweet beavers and brush hogs (regular or baby) are the gold standards. Another bait that doesn't get much press anymore is the 5" zipper worm in junebug...it's basically a fat ring worm but flat out catches em. Years ago it was all the rage on the delta and it still works today. Keep colors to 4 basics: watermelon/red, green pumpkin, purple (like junebug or MMIII), and black/red (or black blue). Focus on your technique, your mechanics, your presentation, feeling your bait and watching your line.

Wow, I have not heard about the Zipper Worm in a long time and it was one of my favorites.
Where are you getting them and who is the supplier?

I'm surprised nobody has told you to practice in the front yard with a coffee can :-), yes the neighbors get a laugh out of it, but it's fun to test your skills out. Also don't make it easy. Learn to go around furniture, trees, and other obstacles. Trying to get to that one spot that most didn't want to go could pay off.

Some good info above. I too preach K.I.S.S. Don't go over kill on colors. Watermelon Red Flake, Green Pumpkin Black Flake, and Black Blue Flake will cover most of your needs.

Have fun.
