The Drop shot

Post by RA8R55 »

In the market for a awesome drop shot reel. I’ve been using the BPS Johnny Morris carbon lite & rod. Just ordered dobyns champ 702sf and looking for a reel. I’ll be light drop shoting, shakey heads, wacky rig.
Any of you guys have any suggestions?

Depending on your budget there are a few options.

Shimano has a few.

I use the Stradic CI4 3000 for what your describing.

Little less money is the regular stradic.

I don’t know why but I love the Daiwa Exceler. Have the same rod as you. I’ve been fishing these reels a long time.

I think the best "affordable" finesse reel is the Daiwa 2500 XH Ballistic... But if you want the "Rolex Watch" of finesse spinning reels = DAIWA EXIST!! https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Daiwa_B ... -DBLT.html

Spinning reel size can be dependant on the line type you use. Braid with a leader is the most popular today to reduce line twist issues and 2000, 2500 are good. Spinning reels with larger rotar diameter are better for straight mono or FC lines to reduce line twisting somewhat.
I use Shimano Stratic 2500 reels with straight 7 lb Sniper for drop shot, 5 lb Max UG for everything else. Stratic reels are bullet proof reels with excellent drags.
Good luck,
Tom

An Abu Revo STX20, Shimano Cxi4 2500, both are great reels with different price points. The slightly larger spools give us that extra capacity, better line management, and more drag surface. Either one of these reels are going to pair up well with that 702 and make fishing these techniques a dream IMHO. Spool up 20lb Nano Braid and you'll be good to go with leaders between 6 -10lbs.
