Split Ring Pliers

Post by Schneider Fishing »

Does anybody know of a good pair of split ring pliers? I have yet to find a pair that does a good job of holding the ring apart while I attach it to something.

Shimano makes a pretty good set, but i find that you need different pliers for different sizes rings. Some dont work on the small rings. The shimano set is good for both most of the time.

Apply the pliers from the outside of the ring for smaller sized split rings. Just need to work slowly to prevent the rings from spitting out of the pliers.

I bought a pair from Anglers Marine, and they're great. I don't know the make, but the handles are black. The main thing to look for is a thin "nose" to slip through the split ring, and a toothed round jaw to help rotate the ring after you have the old hook or new hook or blade started. Make sure the "nose" just clears the end of the round jaw.

I this may sound sorta corny, but try and teach your fingers to open split rings without the pliers. I did this since I was a teenager and I can still do it to this day, with the exception of some musky lures as the split rings can be really hard to open. But with bass lures, no problem at all. The cool part is on the water, you loose way less time, fumbling for the pliers. Just a thought.

These are the best ones ever made, though the black ones Mark is talking about (I think those are Berkley) are also good.

The ones with the black handles are Dis't, by Lead Masters. They are by far the best all-around. They will handle most size split rings. Rick G.
